Romance is not clearly the main focus of Kore Yamazaki’s The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Rather, it tackles more the supernatural and fantasy side that the characters are in. Actually, the relationship between Elias and Chise hasn’t been confirmed to be romantic. But, fans cannot help themselves from shipping them as they have both shown many signs that what they have can or will bloom into something more.

Throughout season one of the series, the relationship between Elias and Chise has been portrayed at varying levels. Sometimes they treat each other as father and daugther, master and apprentice, and most especially sometimes they also act as young teenage lovers.

10. An Eyes Filled with Worry for Chise
Most of the time it is very hard to grasp the emotions that Elias is feeling because of his look. With him only having a goat-like skull head, horns, and empty eye socket with only red beams determining if he’s happy, angry, sad, or jealous had always given Chise a hard time. But, there is an exception. Elias is a very powerful mage. Throughout the series, he has transformed into his different human forms whenever he is out in public.
When Chise and their friends went to the black market to save one of her dragon friends, Elias took the form of still an unknown handsome man. This look was probably his most anticipated human form in season one. However, it is also in this look that he clearly showed what he was feeling. They say that the eyes are windows to the soul which is true. When Chise cried out for her friend, we got to see a worried Elias because of the tears falling from Chise’s eyes. In order to comfort her, Elias immediately grabbed Chise and locked her inside his arms through a hug.


9. Elias Hugging Chise for Doing a Good Job
This was one of the rare moments that made Chise surprisingly blush. Chise Hatori has never cared whether Elias is in his humanoid form or insanely handsome human form. But, this scene was a surprise that sent butterflies to the fans’ stomachs because of how Elias hug Chise in relief. In episode seventeen, Stella’s younger brother got taken by the Ashen Eye, and taking him back wasn’t that simple. The Ashen Eye first challenges both Chise and Stella by taking Elias as another one of his captives.
She only had until sunset to find where the Ashen Eye hid Stella’s younger brother and Elias. Thankfully, Chise found the two who were underwater just in time. But, what Chise might have not expected is for Elias to get out of the water so quickly and hug her tightly in his Chise-like form. Elias’ human form made this scene even more romantic because the two were basically at the same height and he was able to hug her just right. It may have been only for a few seconds. But, it sure stuck in the minds of most ancient magus fans.

8. Elias: A Literal One Call Away Magus
Many leading men in any animated series take the role of a knight in shining armor to their heroine. Just like them, Elias Ainsworth has also shown that he is always there for her adorable sleigh beggy. Before Alice Swayne and Chise Hatori became ultimate besties, they first almost fought each other. In episode five, Mikhail and Alice put a knife in Chise’s neck to convince her to stay away from the ancient magus. However, Chise was not swayed as she was happy and willing to stay beside the man who saved him.
After declaring her loyalty to his master and breaking free from Alice. Elias magically appears behind Chise showing off his thorn magic that swayed them off. This scene was very significant in identifying how their story goes because it was good to know that regardless of the reason. Even if she was solely bought for an experiment, Chise was willing to stay beside Elias which contributed greatly to the bond and trust they have for each other.

7. The First Time Elias and Chise Spent the Night Together
As someone who is still learning about human emotions. Elias often has a hard time dealing with feelings that are new to him. When his jealousy towards Chise’s friends, mainly Stella, began to take over him he ran away from home. He made a huge tantrum because of this. But, how lucky is Elias to have an understanding person like Chise Hatori? Since throwing a tantrum and figuring out feelings can be exhausting. Chise and Elias slept together in bed and she even sang him a lullaby to help him sleep. And yes, it wasn’t weird or creepy like how some fans try to describe it. It was wholesome on a whole other level.

6. Home is Cold Without Each Other
Knowing the ugly past of someone can affect how one perceives a person. However, things are different with Chise. In episode ten, Lindel decided to invite Chise in the Dragon’s Aerie to chat and guide her in making her wand. Chise spending the night with Lindel turned out to be fruitful because she was also able to get a glimpse of Elias’ history. No matter how beautiful or ugly what Lindel shared, Chise realized something and that is how significant he is to her.
Since the magic of Lindel is connected to Elias’ home, Chise was able to talk to him using a water mirror. This is when Elias told Chise without second thoughts how lonely he is without her presence. Therefore, when her wand was done she decided to immediately go home as fast as she can using her magic. True enough, she was able to arrive home and hug Elias who was outside their home waiting for her to return.

5. Exchanging Gifts During Their First Christmas Together
Although the two presumed future lovers didn’t spend the whole day before Christmas together. They got to share warm surprises and smiles on Christmas eve. Chise sneaking out to accompany Alice in buying a gift made her buy her own one to give to Elias. Since she arrived later, it was expected that Elias would be at the front door waiting for her. He was seen being angry at first for her going out without his permission but it didn’t get much worse because she handed out her gift for him.
In episode sixteen, Chise gifted Elias a necklace similar to the one he always wears. When Elias received the gift, you can sense how shy Chise is because of her face blushing. Good thing, Elias appreciated her gift and decided to give Chise the one he made. Elias made a teddy bear for Christmas just for Chise. Since, he is a mage, of course, he added some twist to it. The teddy bear is reinforced with magic that can absorb her excess magic. The real score of their relationship may still be unclear. But, they sure made each other feel special through the gifts they use to surprise one another.

4. The Promise to Stay Together as Long as They can
Since Chise Hatori found out her fate as sleigh beggy, she began to think about how long she will be able to live her life. She is constantly seen in some episodes of the series questioning if she’ll be there next fall or for her next birthday. However, her worries start to fade little by little because of Elias’ unending reassurance. Chise drained herself by using her magical powers when they went to finish the last job that the church has given to Elias. This put her to sleep for a couple of days but was awakened with the help of Oberon, the King of Faeries, magical powers.

When Chise and Elias together with Simon made their way out of the forest and bid their goodbyes, she expressed to Elias that Simon has a very likable personality. Hence, he told her that he had been like that for ten years. This made Chise think of her short lifespan and wished that Elias has bought her 10 years ago. But, Elias gives her the assurance she needs that they will surely spend many years together because his experiment to extend her lifespan will succeed. So boys, learn from this man because he truly knows the right words to say at the right time.

3. Elias and Chise Kissing Under the Mistletoe
Who would have thought that Chise and Elias will share their first kiss in the most traditional but sweetest way? Elias and Chise were able to start the Yule season on the right foot as they shared another one of their first together. During the Yule season in The Ancient Magus’ Bride, faes or the Yule twins came to visit both Chise and Elias. They gave them an evergreen plant which the two later hang outside their door together with the others they collected.
Be it in the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride or here in the real world, kissing under the mistletoe is a thing. Elias mentioned that sharing a kiss under the mistletoe is traditionally done by most. Thus, he asked Chise if she wanted to try it. Guess what? She didn’t hesitate even for a bit! It may have taken a second for Chise to choose the right part of Elias’ skull head, but it indeed made her blush, especially when Elias kissed her back.

2. Elias’ Unexpected Marriage Proposal to Chise Hatori
When you sell yourself as a slave it is only natural to expect the unexpected. In most cases, you expect the worst possible thing that your master will do. But, Elias Ainsworth is completely opposite to what a master of a slave is. Since Chise decided to sell her life because of losing the purpose to live; she may have not expected that she will gain something more beautiful than what she imagined. Elias gave her a new beginning and Chise felt this even during her first day inside his household.
He removed her chains and gave her nice clothes, warm food, and a home she always longed for. But, what may have surprised fans, even more, is receiving a marriage proposal from his master. In episode one, Ariel tried to lure Chise into the forest to get her to her world. Again, she instantly refused because of Elias. In addition, when the two were on their way home, Elias suddenly mentioned that Chise will become her future bride while carrying her in his arms. Definitely, a way to start the series and live up to the show’s title, right?

1. That Time Chise and Elias Exchange Vows
Let’s just say that ever since Elias declared that Chise will become his future bride in episode one many have anticipated their wedding. Well, it finally happened in the last episode of The Ancient Magus’ Bride season one. At the end of the series, all problems have been settled. Hence, it was the perfect time for Chise to orchestra something for her and Elias. In episode twenty-four, we see Chise visiting Angelica and Stella on the same day and they both gave her something that seemed like she requested.
When nighttime finally arrives, Elias went to the forest according to Silver’s instruction. There he found Chise who was sitting beautifully in a white gown. Chise confessed how well things turned out for her since meeting Elias while he promised to make sure that he will never do something she will dislike again. Technically, it wasn’t a literal wedding with all the fancy things and a priest. But, still, it was enough to justify that they both plan to stay with each other as long as they can. With Chise’s white dress, their rings, and promises shared. The mock wedding was a beautiful way to end the series because as they say all is well that ends well.
