Bocchi the Rock Shocks Industry With Soaring Video Sales

By Harold DatuinFebruary 4, 2023

Have you ever felt like you don’t fit in, like you’re on the outside looking in? Hitori Gotoh, better known as “Bocchi-chan,” knows that feeling all too well. She’s so introverted and shy that she always starts her conversations with a hesitant “Ah…” But with the help of her guitar, Bocchi found her voice and her place in the world, and she’s now a rock star, taking the anime industry by storm with her soaring video sales.

Bocchi the Rock is a heartwarming anime series that focuses on a young girl who discovers her passion for music and learns to overcome her shyness. She starts playing the guitar in middle school, practicing for six hours every day in the hopes of finding a band to join. But despite her efforts, she can’t seem to make a single friend, and by the time she reaches high school, she’s on the brink of becoming a shut-in. But then, a drummer from the Kessoku Band reaches out to her, and her life begins to change, little by little.

The Shining Star of Bocchi the Rock

The series, which concluded its first season in December of last year, has been a huge hit in Japan, with its physical release selling tens of thousands of Blu-Ray/DVD sets in just its first five weeks. This success has led fans to speculate about the possibility of a second season, and with the popularity of the franchise, it’s not hard to imagine that the guitar-slinging protagonist will make a comeback to the stage.

If you haven’t had the chance to experience the heartwarming story and rocking tunes of Bocchi the Rock, the first twelve episodes are available to stream on Crunchyroll, with the streaming service sharing the official description which reads as such:

“Hitori Gotoh, “Bocchi-chan,” is a girl who’s so introverted and shy around people that she’d always start her conversations with “Ah…” During her middle school years, she started playing the guitar, wanting to join a band because she thought it could be an opportunity for even someone shy like her to also shine. But because she had no friends, she ended up practicing guitar for six hours every day all by herself. After becoming a skilled guitar player, she uploaded videos of herself playing the guitar to the internet under the name “Guitar Hero” and fantasized about performing at her school’s cultural festival concert. But not only could she not find any bandmates, before she knew it, she was in high school and still wasn’t able to make a single friend! She was really close to becoming a shut-in, but one day, Nijika Ijichi, the drummer in Kessoku Band, reached out to her. And because of that, her everyday life started to change little by little…”
