After the anime adaptation announcement in 2020, Trigger’s Cyberpunk anime was finally released on the 13th of September 2022. While fans are ecstatic and excited about the release, a handful are criticizing Netflix because of the terrible subtitles of the show.
The show is available both in Japanese and English dub. But it’s been an ongoing tradition among anime fans to watch shows dubbed in Japanese (mostly referred to as just ‘sub’ shortcut for ‘subtitles’ since you are watching it in its original language). However, because of the terribly made subtitles by Netflix, many fans and critics alike took to the internet to express their disappointments.
Check out some of the tweets here:
One of the fans even took it as far as to say that the subtitles were laughably bad. That it was simply riddled with typos and nonsense sentences.
Netflix certainly has a bad history, especially with anime and its renditions. The streaming platform was first criticized for having a terrible selection of anime shows, but after 2020, the hate died down as the platform also began streaming and licensing good quality anime shows and is even directly collaborating with multiple streaming platforms, production companies, and animation companies in Japan to make its anime selection better.
Fans expressed their disappointment as Cyberpunk Edgerunners is an anime adaptation they have been looking forward to for a long time. The show having no clear subtitles would certainly affect the viewers’ experience and would tragically change the whole plot, especially if the show is viewed solely in sub.
Thankfully, the English Dubbed version of the show made better sense, and fans still loved the story nonetheless.
However, this is not the first time that Netflix has proven that the subtitles displayed in videos are not above average, they’re not even on par with the average. Anime adaptation aside, there was a big buzz last year around a similar issue.
While watching the famous Korean show, ‘Squid Game,’ many korean watchers who also understood English came to realize how terribly wrong the subtitles of the show were to the point that it altered and changed some crucial parts of the story. The issue blew up and eventually, people started noticing how inaccurate the streaming platform’s subtitles can be.
With many anime shows streaming on Netflix this year, would you opt to stream your favorite shows in Dub or Sub?
