Kazuma Satou did not only die once, but five times in KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! In most isekai shows, characters like Kazuma Satou are transported into a fantasy world through their deaths rather than going to heaven. However, the life that awaits them in the fantasy world isn’t that pleasant. This is because even Kazuma Satou struggled and died a few times.
Death acts as the key factor for the main characters to get into another world and fulfill their mission. Most isekai protagonists have the chance to live their lives again as heroes from another world. Kazuma Satou is just like most main characters in isekai shows.

There is little to no interesting thing about the life of Kazuma before becoming an adventurer. Like most, he was only a shut-in high schooler who preferred to stay in his dark room playing games all day and night. Unfortunately faced death numerous times either as a consequence of his own action, his party members, or just him fulfilling his mission as the isekai hero in the parallel world.
How Did Kazuma Died in Konosuba?
Kazuma Satou’s First Death
Kazuma seems like the man who defies the rules of heaven because of dying three times but always comes back to life. He has faced death thrice and has won his life over and over again. During his first death, Kazuma died in the most pathetic way, Kazuma Satou’s life ended too early. However, it seemed like his reincarnated life began too early for him. With the hope of saving a girl from his school, Kazuma Satou pushed her to avoid the truck that almost hit her. Well, unfortunately, Kazuma died before finding out if his heroic action was able to save the girl.

Meeting the Goddess of Water, Aqua, later informed him about the consequences of his supposedly life-saving action. Instead of being studied for his death because of saving someone, Kazuma found the aftermath of his action more dismaying than ever. Aqua laughed and ridiculed the way Kazuma died in his previous life. It turns out that his sleepless nights for more than three days got the worst of him. Kazuma didn’t save the girl and didn’t get the chance to be reincarnated into a fantasy world because of the classic truck-kun.

Instead, his three days of no sleep resulted in him hallucinating a slow-moving tractor as a truck. So, the girl he was aiming to save didn’t actually need the saving from Kazuma at all. According to Aqua, the slow-moving tractor did not even hit the girl, and his death wasn’t connected to the accident at all.

Although Kazuma was ready to give his life away for the girl, the pressure and fear of being hit by a truck resulted in him having a heart attack. It was not only Aqua who found his death funny. But a fan even shared on Twitter that she considers it to be the funniest anime moment:
From the looks of how he died, Kazuma always had hero instincts in him but had a hint of cowardice from within. Not only did Aqua laugh at him for his pathetic death, but more so because he peed his pants before dying. Aqua even emphasized that Kazuma Satou’s own family also laughed at how ridiculous he died. This made the young Neet more irritated toward the Goddess. This resulted in him taking Aqua as his cheat to the other world. Together, they both got transported into his new life as an adventurer in the fantasy world.
Kazuma Satou’s Second Death
Kazuma Satou’s succeeding deaths happened in the fantasy world. His second death happened during a kill quest they accepted one hundred thousand eris for each kill. Kazuma was on the lows and needed money as soon as possible. He had enough of sleeping in the cold and smelly stable every single night. Therefore, Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness decided to take the quest of killing snow sprites.

Despite having little knowledge about snow sprites, money was the top priority of Kazuma Satou. They went on to complete the quest and killed a bunch of snow sprites. At first, it was an easy job for the group, especially because snow sprites are considered to be weak. And to make their work much easier, Megumin decide to use her explosion which immediately backfired on them.
Kazuma was late to realize that his masochistic crusader was excited about the quest because of certain reasons. Snow Sprites may be weak, but killing them will force or attract the fearsome Winter Shogon to come out. The Winter Shogun possesses a magical ability and strength that is similar to a Demon King’s General. Therefore, Kazuma and his friends were definitely not ready for it. Kazume died during this quest and faced the Goddess of Luck and Fortune, Eris.

Eris was ready to reincarnate Kazume into peaceful Japan under a wealthy family. Kazuma even felt emotional and shed some tears because of the thought of leaving the girls behind. However, his death or another version of reincarnation got delayed when Aqua interfered and bullied Eris for her to violate the rules of heaven for Kazuma. Well, Eris was the complete opposite of Aqua and cannot stand her senpai spilling her secrets. Therefore, she allowed Kazuma to return to the parallel world with his friends.
Kazuma Satou’s Third Death
Another kill quest has made Kazuma’s life in the parallel world harder. After purchasing his new sword that Megumin named Chunchunmaru, Kazuma and his party members went to the countryside for a quest. The four of them already have their own rules to play and would just have to take action according to Kazuma’s plan. The kill quest they had to accomplish is to eliminate a group of lizard runners.

Everything was going smoothly and first and Kazuma only needed to shoot down the princess and prince Lizard. But, Aqua never missed the chance to put all their plans down the drain and get themselves into much more trouble. Kazuma was able to hit the princess lizard or the princess runner. However, due to the lizard’s impact from falling, Kazume slipped, broke his neck, and fell into the other lizard runner.
Once again, Kazuma Satou reunites with the Goddess of Fortune and Luck, Eris, who wasn’t even surprised by him. Instead of offering to reincarnate him, Eris advises him to be more careful and not be too careless. Surprisingly, Kazuma was even comfortable enough to sit and have a conversation with Eris while he waits to be revived again. Although Kazuma refuses to be bought back from the dead, Aqua together with Megumin and Darkness blackmailed him which effectively convinced him.

Kazuma Satou’s Fourth Death
In Konosuba OVA: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful Choker! Kazuma dies for the fourth time in the series and in the most pathetic way again. In this episode, Kazuma and his party members went to the shop of their friend, Wiz, to simply visit her and say hello. Upon arriving the group noticed that Yunyun was in the shop and was probably waiting for her rival, Megumin. In order for Yunyun to hide her true intention, she pretended to shop and accidentally grabbed a choker that supposedly grants any wishes.

“The choker will grant any of your wishes” were the words engraved on the choker. Kazuma being the man he is, he picked it up when Yunyun dropped into due to bantering with Megumin. He didn’t know that wearing that choker means that he has to fulfill his own goals. Also, the choker gradually tightens and will kill the one who wears it if the wish isn’t fulfilled.

Kazuma Satou had no idea what his wish was when he wore the choker. Therefore, the girls help him in finding out and save him from the possible death that is waiting for him. Despite the girls not being in favor of his over-the-line wishes which are mostly sexual harassment, they still helped him. But, his choker still tightens, and zero from the wishes he thought he had was good enough to save him.

Thus, he gave up on making the girls grant his unbelievable wishes and made peace with them. From this scene, a small sound of click can be heard initiating that the choker can now be removed. He continued to say all the negative praise and impression he has of the girls until the choker fell off. Kazuma soon realized that peace was what he wanted. The girls didn’t hesitate to show their disappointment, so Aqua forced him to wear the choker again.
By the end of the episode, Kazuma faces Eris again who suggested that he not die in a very ridiculous manner. It is safe to assume that either the girls killed him due to irritation or he didn’t survive the second time he wears the magical choker.

Kazuma Satou’s Fifth Death
This death is probably Kazuma Satou’s most gruesome death throughout the series. Kazuma became the hero for the people of Yunyun and Megumin in KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson. Kazuma and his party members, and other friends had to work together to defeat another Demon King General named Sylvia who wanted to ruin the village of the Crimson Demons.

Sylvia was too powerful that even Demon King Generals like her, specifically Wiz and Vanir, struggled to hold her off. But, before Kazuma and his team completely retreat from the battlefield, he made a plan for Sylvia to lower guard and be defeated. Everyone went along with his plans and had to act fast. Kazuma confessed his love for Sylvia which caught her off guard.
Because Sylvia was a chimera, their bodies joined together while they professed their love for one another. But, Sylvia wasn’t aware that this was all part of their plan. The villagers joined together to combine all of their powers together which Wiz draw to Yunyun and Megumin who was in charge of the final attack.

The immense power accumulated from the villagers, as well as, Yunyun and Megumi’s stamina and strength cast magic powerful enough to defeat Sylvia. However, this was all possible through Kazuma who was deceiving Sylvia all along that made her let down her guard. Since the bodies of the two were intertwined, Kazuma perished alongside Sylvia.

Hence, he faced the Goddess of Fortune and Luck, Eris, who even threw up from looking at how gruesome Kazuma’s body turned out. Thanks to Aqua’s blessing, Kazuma’s body wasn’t blown beyond smithereens and was able to be resurrected.
Is Kazuma Powerful Enough to Save Himself?
No. Kazuma was never that powerful in the series, to begin with. Although he is the main character of the series and the chosen isekai hero, Kazuma’s abilities and party members hold back the chances of him fulfilling his mission in the parallel world. His negative character, such as being lazy and obnoxious, together with his most of the time pathetic party members leads to more problems for their team that even killed him a few times.

However, the strength of his party members individually is something that cannot be denied. The girls have their own strength that only if they were more like the usual isekai protagonists then they would all become undefeatable. Sadly, they are not. But, these girls and Kazuma have saved each other’s back many times, especially Aqua who acts as the team’s support. Being a Goddess, Aqua is a powerful archpriest in the fantasy world and has proven that by having the ability to revive the dead.
As the series goes on and as Kazuma faces death more, he becomes more laid back. Although death is the last thing that he wants for himself, Kazuma’s laidback attitude comes with Aqua who is capable of saving him.

Kazuma’s head has been torn off and his body has been wounded multiple times. But, he always has a body to return to when Eris sends him off to the parallel world because of Aqua’s god-like healing prowess. Therefore, Aqua may have been a burden to Kazuma plenty of times. But, she looks after him most of the time like how Kazuma does for her and the other girls.
Will Kazuma Go Back to His World?
It can be safely assumed that Kazuma Satou will no longer be coming to his previous life in peaceful Japan unless he gets reincarnated as a baby. Unlike isekai heroes like Naofum Iwatani from The Rising of the Shield Hero and Natsuki Subaru from Re: Zero, Kazuma Satou no longer has the body to return because he wasn’t only transported into a parallel world. He may not have started his journey all over again as a baby in the fantasy world, but the way he becomes one is still considered a reincarnation.

Kazuma Satou got himself into an accident that killed him and brought him into the parallel world with a mission. Hence, going back to his previous life and reuniting with his family would be impossible. When Kazuma died because of the Winter Shogun, Eris was about to reincarnate him back to peaceful Japan as a son of a wealthy family.
Kazuma’s mission to defeat the Demon King and bring Aqua back to the heavens isn’t fulfilled yet. However, with the Goddesses like Aqua and Eris on his side, it can be safely assumed that Kazuma can be given the choice to die and be reincarnated or stay with all of his friends in the fantasy world.
