Engagements or marriages are topics that usually don’t involve fifteen or sixteen years old girls. In most cases, teenagers like Chise Hatori are still at the age of learning the ways of life and having cute little crushes of course. However, just like most main characters we see on television, Chise also experiences a traumatizing childhood. These miseries made her live a life different from kids her age. Fortunately, she met his future groom in the midst of giving up. Through Elias, she was introduced to a new world and was given a promise of marriage.

The Development of Chise Hatori and Elias Ainsworth’s Relationship
Mages’ in the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride are considered an old fashion kind and are endangered. For the past decades that Elias has lived, he was not seen that much by the public. Therefore, when he decided to buy a sleigh beggy and make it his apprentice, news traveled fast. Chise is no doubt powerful because of the magical energy that her body can absorb; however, with Elias’ guidance, she learned more about how to use it.
Being bought as a slave to Elias allowed her to enjoy life’s beauty and learn from its mundane side. Hence, their relationship developed more to the point of Chise actually arranging a small wedding-like ceremony just for them both. But, before that let’s take a look at how their relationship evolved throughout season one.
Master and Apprentice Relationship
This is the first stage of Elias and Chise’s relationship. Basically, the start of everything. It is never right to call Chise as Elias’ slave even though he bought her as one. Elias has never treated Chise cruelly or in any negative way. Aside from announcing that Chise will be her future bride the first day that he bought her, Elias also expressed his intention to make her his apprentice. Right after bringing her to London, Elias freed her from her chains and emphasize that she will take the role as his apprentice.
By relying on Elias’ wisdom and all the books available inside his house, Chise’s knowledge of how to make magical potions became wider. In episode seven of season one, after finishing the first two tasks assigned to them by the church. She finally decided to take studying as a mage seriously and was able to successfully make a very strong sleeping potion.

However, Chise also became Elias’ master at some point. Elias lacks the ability to assess human emotions. This is the reason why he always had a hard time figuring out the feelings that instantly comes to him. Thus, in return, Chise promised him to be his master in learning about human emotions making their master-apprentice relationship reversible at times.

Parent and Child Relationship
Sometimes the adult one is Elias and sometimes it can be Chise. At the beginning of the series, Elias acts more like a father looking after his daughter than a future groom. We have seen him bathing her, making sure that she eats, and patting her head when she does a good job. Elias may have declared her to be his bride someday. But, the huge age gap is quite evident; therefore, fans also discuss him being more of a parent to Chise in a few scenes. But, we also have to take into account that Elias doesn’t have much experience in terms of dealing with human beings.

These are emotions that made him confused but it was good to know that he had a guardian on his side which is none other than Chise. Ruth, Chise’s familiar, even pointed out that Chise acts like Elias’ mother sometimes. This happened particularly when he was comforted by her after his huge tantrum. Chise held his hand until they got home, put him to bed, and sang him a lullaby to sleep.

Young Teenage Lovers
When the story is about the main characters being husband and wife someday it is only natural that they first go through the dating stage. Chise and Elias may not literally be dating like going on dates and watching movies together. But, they have shown affection towards each other as more than friends or more than their master-apprentice relationship. You can say that these affections of them also fall under their parent-child relationship. But, their actions are just too sweet to include it in that category.
For instance, when Elias went out leaving only a note on his bedside table for Chise it made her truly worried. Thus, when she finally found him getting soaked in a pond, she was angry and worried at the same time. You can also feel the hurt in Chise’s voice when Elias was not ready to tell her the truth about what is going on with him. Typical lovers quarrel? You can say that.

In addition, Lindel inviting Chise to the Dragon Aerie was the first time that Chise and Elias were away from each other even for just a couple of days. Like anyone during the earlier stage of dating, you easily miss them and are always eager to be with them. Well, that’s what happened between the two. When Chise was finally home both of them spent some alone time talking inside their greenhouse. Let’s not forget about their scene in the greenhouse where he pulls her when she was about to go out and bravely told how cold it was when she was gone which showed that there is truly a chemistry between these two.
