GIVEN STAIRCASE SCENE

Given Anime: Is It Bl & Sad?

By Janiene LerioOctober 4, 2022

Is given anime gay? Well, yes, it’s gay. Very much so. Given is an LGBTQ/ BL anime that focuses on two high school sweethearts with tragic pasts. It revolves around music, bands, and relationships in your early-late teens, and talks of struggles like suicide, trauma, and identity.

Even with a heavy plot, many fans love watching this series because it gives a sense of familiarity and comfort even amidst an identity crisis. It has really good songs too. With everyone so focused on anime genres like shounen and shoujo, shows like Given are definitely considered a breath of fresh air.

What’s Given Anime About?

Given is a BL anime that focuses on Sato Mafuyu, a high school student who has a hidden talent for music.

Mafuyu is not much of a talker, in fact, he probably never interacted with people his age after a tragic incident at his old school. That is until he met Uenoyama Ritsuka. Uenoyama, or Ue, as he is fondly called, is a music prodigy. He played all kinds of instruments and has been recognized for his unbeatable musical talents. But, every genius kid has their burnout. After having seen so many “failed” musicians, Ue lost all his hope of ever finding a band that satisfied him.

As the story unfolds, we see both Mafuyu and Uenoyama finding their place in a four-man band. With Mafuyu’s amazing vocals surprising both the crowd and Uenoyama, they find themselves in a whirlwind romance filled with music, songs, and glimpses of the past.

Is Given Anime Sad?

Yes, it is. It’s painful, and you’d probably require therapy after watching it, but it does not mean that it’s not good. Given is a beautiful anime and manga. Though there certainly are sad parts, these instances would not come close to the sheer serotonin boost of the show because of how adorable the characters are.
Given is definitely worth the watch, it’s also definitely worth your tears! So sit back, relax, and enjoy crying to the beautiful melodies of each of the songs that Mafuyu sings.
