Curious as to how Denji get his powers? Chainsaw Man anime is still a month away but many are already getting hyped over Shonen Jump’s newest eccentric hero. If you’re in for a little spoiler, here’s a brief guide on how Denji, a.k.a. Chainsaw Man, got his hands on his odd yet terrifying ability.
The World of Chainsaw Man
Chainsaw Man is a dark fantasy manga written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The story is set in a world where dangerous devils roam around the human world. The main character of the series is a youngster named Denji. Orphaned at such a young age, Denji was left with nothing but a huge debt to settle. Depressed and disillusioned, he encountered a small dog-like devil with a chainsaw sticking out of its head. Seeing the devil dog wounded and dying, Denji offered his blood to save the creature. This signalled the beginning of their relationship.
Denji and the devil dog, which he named Pochita, then started living together as pet and owner. Denji now lives off by selling some of his organs and killing devils for money. Just as he thinks life wouldn’t get any darker, he was betrayed by the mafia boss he was working for and got killed. That was supposed to be the end of his story … until he acquired a formidable power that will change the course of his life forever.

What is Denji’s Power and How Did He Get It?
The brutal death of Denji triggered the birth of Chainsaw Man. During that fateful night, Denji was tricked by his mafia boss into doing his usual job as a devil hunter. Just as they arrived at the agreed location, he was surprised to get stabbed in the back.
As it turned out, the mafia boss actually made a pact with a Zombie Devil and lost his free will in the process. Denji was then brutally cut into pieces and thrown into the trash along with the body of his ever loyal dog, Pochita.
Just as he was about to die, he saw Pochita in his dreams. There, they made a pact: Pochita will become his heart and bring him back to life; in exchange, Denji will show him more of his dreams. Later on, we will learn that Pochita was actually the famed hero of hell, called the Chainsaw Devil, before he came into the human world. Living with Denji, he got enthralled with the young boy and admitted liking hearing about his dreams of living a normal life.
Denji eventually woke up alive and well, but Pochita is already nowhere to be seen. He noticed that a cord similar to that of Pochita was now sticking out of his heart. Whenever he pulls that cord, chainsaws will start sprouting out of his body – substituting his arms, legs, and head.
So that’s how Chainsaw Man came to be. Can’t wait to see everything be translated into the small screen?
