Hunter x Hunter has been a well-known series ever since it came out. The hit Shonen Jump series, created years ago, is regarded as a classic, and creator Yoshihiro Togashi has led it since day one. Despite several hiatuses, Hunter x Hunter remains extremely popular with readers, and its most recent updates have incorporated several modifications. So, of course, Yoshihiro was asked about his recent choice to increase the words in Hunter x Hunter.
Yoshihiro recently justified himself in a letter that was made public by a Japanese talk show. The artist noticed a noticeable rise of text in his comic, and the latest alteration was made for five key reasons.
According to Yoshihiro, these are the five main reasons why Hunter x Hunter has become wordier in its recent releases (in no particular order):
- The essential material that readers must understand is already extremely broad including the introduction of various new Nen powers, the facts of the Succession Contest, and the histories of each Prince.
- In terms of narrative structure, there are several unresolved conflicts that must be addressed throughout the journey… As a result, the essential knowledge presented in Part One has grown even more.
- He mentions that he is playing with characters and how they feel about their objectives in this current arc... The number of words deleted would have been 10 times greater than the world count in a single final storyboard.
- Yoshihiro states that he wants the Princes and their respective personnel to be more than just background characters, hence, the extensive use of monologues.
- He also mentioned that he is “bugged as an author” but that he also knows that word count is equivalent to a complimentary service.
Note: This is not a direct translation of Yoshihiro’s words, but it captures the thought of his statement. If you wish to know the extensive details of Yoshihiro’s decision, @TheHxHSource on X (previously Twitter) has provided a translation of the interview, check it out here:
Hunter x Hunter has undoubtedly grown wordier, but this is on purpose. The Succession Contest storyline is extremely complex, and Yoshihiro must explain a large chunk of its secrets through explanation. So, as new Hunter x Hunter chapters are released, prepare your head for all the words they will include.
