Muichiro Tokito is actually a boy in Demon Slayer!
Keeping in mind that many are perplexed as to Muichiro Tokito’s true identity, given that we saw him in the anime with a gentle and dainty appearance, we can say that the truth is far from what one may anticipate.
Muichiro was introduced as one of the Hashira in the demon slayer Corps in episode 22 of Demon Slayer season 1, marking his debut. He stood out for his short stature, long straight hair that was colored black to mint green, and his customized baggy clothes, which served as his uniform as a demon slayer.

Following this, a member of the Kakushi informed Tanjiro that the Hashira were the top-ranked swordsmen in the demon slayer corps. They were renowned for their immense combat abilities, being considered the most skilled swordsmen in terms of style, technique, and overall strength when fighting demons. Due to their exceptional capabilities, the Hashira was entrusted with the responsibility of safeguarding humanity against dangerous threats that other demon slayers were incapable of handling.
Muichiro holds a significant place in the history of Hashira as he became the youngest member to join the pillars at the age of 14. Remarkably, it took him only two months to join the top-tier demon slayers after he picked up a sword for the very first time. It was later revealed in chapter 165 that his exceptional strength was due to being a direct descendant of Michikatsu Tsugikuni, who was the brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni – the most powerful demon slayer who has ever lived.

Appearance
Muichiro is a male character who has a small build and is relatively short in stature. He sports long, straight hair that ranges from black to mint green and extends down to his waist. His hair is styled with bangs that cover his forehead and two tufts of hair that protrude from either side of his head. He has large, mint-green eyes that appear to be emotionless, almost doll-like in nature.
In terms of attire, Muichiro dons a modified version of the Demon Slayer uniform which features a slight turquoise tint that matches his hair color. His uniform is notably looser and baggier than the standard version, with long, flowing sleeves. He completes his look with dark blue tabi socks and white zori that have dark blue straps.
It’s important not to make assumptions based solely on appearances, as they can often be misleading. Muichiro’s long hair doesn’t necessarily indicate his gender. Furthermore, it was common during the Taisho Period to wear loose-fitting clothing that was designed to support breathing techniques, which were used to disorient opponents during battles. Muichiro’s baggy uniform was likely designed to help him achieve this technique as effectively as possible.

Personality
Muichiro comes across as an absent-minded character who often seems lost in his own thoughts and struggles to concentrate. He tends to remain impassive and can be quite obtuse at times. Muichiro tends to prioritize his own thinking and frequently relies on logic rather than emotions, to guide his actions. This often makes him appear indifferent and unconcerned about things.
In season 1, episode 22 of Demon Slayer, Muichiro appeared detached from the situation as the other Hashiras were passing judgment on Tanjiro’s actions of caring for a demon. Instead, he was lost in thought, gazing up at the sky and attempting to identify the clouds.
Later, when the Hashiras were once again delivering their verdict on Tanjiro’s actions, Muichiro was observed staring at a bird flying above the mansion. Throughout the few episodes in which he appeared, Muichiro’s behavior and actions seemed to deviate from what one might expect from a typical person, leaving an impression on viewers.

Chapter 118 of the manga revealed that Muichiro had a distinctly different personality in the past. During his time with his family, he was generally compassionate and optimistic, much like most children.
Muichiro had a twin brother named Yuichiro, who had a starkly different outlook on life. While Muichiro was hopeful, Yuichiro lived with a sense of hopelessness and confided in Muichiro about his feelings. Despite this, Muichiro still displays a higher level of kindness and understanding, much like their father. He believed that doing good for others was essential if he wanted good to be done to him. However, Yuichiro dismissed this notion, citing their father’s tragic death while searching for medicine for their mother during a storm as evidence that such ideals were meaningless. Both Muichiro and Yuichiro’s parents died under terrible circumstances.
According to Muichiro, living with him was akin to a torturous experience, as he believed that Yuichiro despised him and perceived him as emotionally distant.

As spring arrived, Oyakata’s wife paid a visit to the Tokito household to inform them that they were descendants of a long line of swordsmen and the first breath users. She extended an invitation for both brothers to join the demon slayers. However, Yuichiro vehemently rejected the offer and rudely drove her away, even though Muichiro had expressed interest in becoming a demon slayer.
The topic sparked a heated argument between the two brothers, with Yuichiro crushing Muichiro’s aspirations of becoming a demon slayer due to his own sense of hopelessness, which was largely shaped by their parents’ tragic deaths.
Following their argument, the two brothers stopped speaking to each other. However, during the summertime, a demon unexpectedly barged into their home and severed Yuichiro’s arm. Witnessing this event, Muichiro tapped into his innate demon slayer abilities and, armed with only two axes, launched rocks and sticks at the demon’s head and body, eventually defeating it.

Upon returning to Yuichiro, Muichiro felt an immense weight on his body, slowing his movements to a crawl. Despite their home being in plain sight, it took him several hours to reach it. As a result, the brothers were in dire straits, and when Muichiro finally arrived at their doorstep, he found Yuichiro on the brink of death due to massive blood loss from his severed arm.
Before Muichiro’s brother passed away, Yuichiro offered a prayer to the gods that Muichiro overheard. He struggled to speak, uttering the words before passing away:
“Please just spare my brother; unlike me, he’s a really nice kid. He wants to be useful, and I got in the way. I’m the only bad one. If you’re giving punishment, just give it to me.”

The loss of both his parents and the subsequent death of his brother left an indelible mark on Muichiro’s mental well-being. He struggled to cope with the intense emotional pain caused by their deaths, to the point where he experienced temporary memory loss. Afterward, he seemed to have adopted a personality similar to that of his deceased brother ─ a cold, hopeless boy.
