Studio Ghibli fans are going to love this. The live action adaptation of Whisper of the Heart has shared a video compiling the clips recreating the scenes from the anime film!
The live action Whisper of the Heart sequel is slated to premiere in Japanese theaters nationwide this October 14, 2022. Originally, the film was supposed to be released last 2020, but it was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whisper of the Heart is a manga authored by Aoi Hiiragi, in which the Studio Ghibli film is based on. The live film will follow up on the events of the Studio Ghibli film, with its setting 10 years later. Shizuku has long given up her dream on becoming a writer, while Seiji is still studying abroad. Since they are away from each other for years, there is a strain between the two of them. Will they be able to keep their childhood promise to each other to get married? Will their love persist in adulthood?

Whisper of the Heart Story
Whisper of the Heart tells the tale of a 14-year-old girl named Shizuku Tsukishima who dreamt of becoming a writer. She loved reading books, and has a wide imagination. She then keeps on encountering the name “Seiji Amasawa” on the library cards she had checked out. She encountered him by chance one day, and she did not have a good impression of him.
As time goes on, she is able to develop a friendship with Seiji, as she discovered they have a lot in common. Seiji is passionate about becoming a violin maker or a luthier, while Shizuki is passionate about writing. They fall in love with another, but Seiji is planning to go to Cremona, Italy to study on becoming a successful luthier. Despite this, Seiji declared his love for Shizuku and asked her to marry him in the future. Shizuku agreed, as she will do her best to become a writer.
Whisper of the Heart Manga & Film Background
Aoi Hiiragi is the author of the Whisper of the Heart manga, and it was published in a single volume in 1990. Studio Ghibli adapted the manga into an anime film in 1995, where it was received with positive and favorable reviews.
Studio Ghibli also released a spin-off film, The Cat Returns, in 2002. This is centered around the cat figurine, The Baron, that was featured in Whisper of the Heart. The Baron was also the subject of Shizuku’s first novel. The Cat Returns is also an original manga by Aoi Hiiragi.
Aoi Hiiragi also published a sequel of Whisper of the Heart manga titled, Whisper of the Heart: Happy Time, where it continues Shizuku’s story 2 years into the future. This was not adapted into an anime film.
