It hasn’t been long since legendary basketball anime Slam Dunk returned with the premiere of its hit movie, The First Slam Dunk. And while the film continues to dominate cinemas in Japan, the local governemt of Kamukara City is now tightening its security by adding more guards to the famous railway crossing featured in the opening video of the 1993 Slam Dunk anime.
In an article posted on Sunday, news outlet FNN reported that the Kamakura City in Kanagawa is now hiring additional security guards to patrol the iconic train crossing as more tourists continue to flock and create disruptions in the famous spot. According to the site, many people are seen walking out onto the street taking pictures despite visible signages in the area instructing people not to do such in order to avoid collisions and other accidents. Local residents are also now burdened with traffic as many tourists continuously stop their cars near the railways crossing to momentarily marvel at and take shots of the scenic view of the place.
Published in 1990, Slam Dunk is a popular basketball manga written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. The series inspired a television anime in 1993 and became a well-loved series across the globe. In the opening video of the anime, the main lead Hanamichi Sakuragi is portrayed standing before the railway at Kamakurakōkōmae Station, while his love interest, Haruko, and her friends, stand on the other side of the crossing.
Today, more than a decade since the TV anime aired, the railway crossing featured in the anime’s opening video remains a popular tourist destination.
The First Slam Dunk serves as the comeback film of the iconic sports anime. It premiered last Dec 3 and remains #1 in the box office for its sixth week. You can watch the trailer of the film below:
