Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prevalent in our daily lives, with netizens online sharing art made primarily by machines rather than artists. While the subject has sparked several debates, it appears that the anime industry is getting in on the act of producing artificial art of its own, with the release of a new short collaboration between Netflix, Wit Studio, and technology company Rinna Inc. Fortunately, you can watch this short right now without a Netflix account.
Netflix Japan has released a new short anime film that tells the heartbreaking story of a futuristic dog and his owner who are separated by unfortunate circumstances but reunited in a bittersweet fashion as the streaming service expands into the field of anime:

“A short movie of the joint project animation “Dog and Boy” by Netflix Anime Creators Base, technology developer Rinna Inc., and WIT STUDIO. As an experimental effort to help the anime industry, which has a labor shortage, we used image generation technology for the background images of all three-minute video cuts.
With the likes of Attack on Titan, Wit Studio became a player in the anime universe, producing the first three seasons before giving over the mantle to Studio MAPPA for the fourth and final season, which is expected to return later this year. A similar situation has occurred with Vinland Saga, as Wit created the first season of the Viking epic but has now entrusted the series to MAPPA with the start of its second season. With Wit’s recent major blockbusters Spy x Family and Ranking of Kings, it will be intriguing to see whether future projects integrate artificial intelligence as well.
While Spy x Family has been confirmed for a movie and a second season, Wit has yet to be confirmed to return to the story of Loid, Yor, and Anya, and with the first season seeing them partnering with CloverWorks, it will be interesting to see if they’re in it for the long haul when it comes to one of the biggest new anime series of 2022.
