GENCO is continually producing the series in partnership with Tezuka Productions, with M2 creating the animation.

“I salute the boldness of everyone who has taken on the challenge of developing an anime based on PLUTO,” Urasawa stated in a comment supplied by Netflix. I’m ecstatic about the birth of this new series that will win people’s hearts. I hope that now more than ever, Osamu Tezuka’s message reaches the world.” Takashi Nagasaki added, “PLUTO inherits the philosophy of Tezuka and does not merely convey a message of anti-war, but reminds us that there is suffering on both sides… but still, the only remaining answer is peace.”

Macoto Tezuka, a son of the late Osamu Tezuka, said, “The animated PLUTO is the real deal, and in addition to this being Urasawa’s latest work, this is also a new Tezuka anime.” Tezuka also expressed his anticipation for the upcoming Netflix feature.

The Pluto manga is a seinen drama re-imagining of the planet described in Osamu Tezuka’s manga Astro Boy by Urasawa and producer Takashi Nagasaki. From 2003 until 2009, the series was published in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Original magazine, and it has eight compilation book volumes. The manga has been translated and published in 20 countries, including the United States and France. The tale is described by Viz Media, who published the manga in North America:

In a distant future where sentient humanoid robots pass for humans, someone or something is out to destroy the seven great robots of the world. Europol’s top detective Gesicht is assigned to investigate these mysterious robot serial murders – the only catch is that he himself is one of the seven targets.

In 2010, Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment purchased the film rights to Pluto from Tezuka Productions for a projected live-action/computer graphics (CG) hybrid feature.
