The seventh highest-grossing movie in Japan, One Piece Film Red, is back on the big screen for a limited time. The film has earned 20.18 billion yen (~US$134.68 million) so far, matching the record of Princess Mononoke. It is also the fourth most successful anime movie in the country.
The film’s popularity is evident from its weekend box office performance. It slipped from second to third place due to the new releases of Godzilla -1.0 and Sumikko Gurashi the Movie: Tsugihagi Koubou no Fushigi na Ko. However, it still managed to top the chart in its first weekend of re-release.
The re-run of One Piece Film Red, which started on October 20, features the following enhancements:
- The updated version of the film that was available on UHD BD, Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming platforms.
- 4K resolution for a better viewing experience.
- Interactive screening that allows the audience to clap, cheer, and wave light sticks.
One Piece Film Red was originally released on August 6, 2022 and ran until January 29 of this year. It made 19.7 billion yen in Japan, placing it between Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. It also grossed 31.9 billion yen (~US$212.97 million) worldwide. It is the 15th and most lucrative One Piece movie.
