Phoenix is a manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka and is considered his “life’s work”. The series contains 12 books, each one tells a self-contained story that is set in a different era. The plots alternate between the distant future to primordial eras. Tezuka’s death in 1989 ended the plot before it could be completed.

Several of the stories have inspired anime series and OVAs, as well as a live-action feature. As of 2007, the entire manga series has been translated into English.

WHAT IS PHOENIX MANGA ABOUT?

Phoenix is a story about reincarnation. Each story revolves around a quest for immortality, symbolized by the blood of the titular bird of fire, which Tezuka depicts as resembling the Fenghuang, a mythical bird in Chinese mythology. The blood of the Fenghuang is thought to give eternal life but in Phoenix, immortality is either unattainable or a dreadful curse, whereas in Buddhist-style reincarnation is depicted as the natural course of existence.

The stories spring back and forth between ancient times and the far future; Dawn takes place in ancient times, and the second, Future, takes place in the far future. Tezuka’s ideas are explored in both historical and science fiction settings in subsequent works that alternate between the past and the future. There are several recurrent characters in the stories, some of them are drawn from Tezuka’s star system.
