Bittersweet news to manga readers: Akane Torikai’s Saturn Return is heading to its finale this month. Shogakukan’s Weekly Big Comic Spirits magazine revealed the news on Tuesday, Oct 11, stating that the hit seinen series is scheduled to end in two chapters. This means the manga will end on Oct 24, assuming there will be no breaks.
First released in 2019, the manga follows the story of Ritsuko Kaji, a struggling novelist. Five years after her successful debut, Ritsuko finds herself unable to write, calling herself simply a “one hit wonder.” One day, she awakens from a strange dream: Aio, a close friend from the past, appears in her dreams, posing the question “Your life… is that really it?” She then wakes up to a phone call, receiving the news that Aoi has committed suicide.

Poignant, raw, and moving, Saturn Return is a psychological romance manga that tackles the themes of death, grief, and redemption. It was launched in Weekly Big Comic Spirits.

Akane Torikai, the creator of the series, was known for her piercing seinen works. She made her debut in 2004 and started her first serialization in 2010. Her other popular manga series are Sensei no Shiroi Uso (Teacher’s White Lie), Jigoku no Girlfriend (Girlfriend from Hell), Mandarin Gypsy Cat no Rōjō, and Romance Bōfūiki.
