Suzume Background
Makoto Shinkai is the director of Suzume, and he is known for directing critically acclaimed films such as Your Name and Weathering With You.
Shinkai got the idea for the Suzume when he was traveling across Japan and stumbled upon deserted sites. According to Shinkai, in Japan, there is a jichin-sai or groundbreaking ceremony whenever there is a new construction of a home or building, but there is none when it’s being closed down. Shinkai thought it would be a good idea to mourn deserted places, which is what Suzume is about.
Upon its release, Suzume has received praises from critics. It was even nominated in the 47th Hochi Film Award under the Best Animated Picture category.
