Seems like Sword Art Online is not stopping anytime soon to produce more content! Fans will be excited to know that a new film is currently in production! A teaser was also revealed to add to the hype.
This announcement was made during Sword Art Online‘s 10th anniversary event: “Sword Art Online -Full Dive-” last November 6, 2022.
The new film is described as “original”, which meant that it will not follow the Sword Art Online Progressive film series’ storyline. What could it possibly be? Details and updates will be shared soon by Sword Art Online’s official Twitter account!

Sword Art Online Synopsis
A new game got released, Sword Art Online, and it is a VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). That was not all, as it utilizes a system that can make the gamers fully immerse themselves – which is the NerveGear. It makes the game very realistic by manipulating the brain waves of the players.
It all seemed exciting at first as the players tried it and found themselves in the world of Aincrad. It is a fantastical and medieval world, and players can do anything with their imagination. That is until they have discovered that the “log out” button is gone.
Now trapped within the confines of the game, players strived to escape by clearing the 100 levels Aincrad has because they will be able to escape this way. They are all very difficult, and they have to be careful because if they die in-game, they will also die in real life.
Among these players, Kirito Kirigaya felt lucky that he was a beta tester for the game, so he has more knowledge. However, the difficulty of Aincrad’s levels prompted him to team up with another player, Asuna Yuuki. Will they overcome more trials along the way?
Sword Art Online Progressive Film Background
There have been multiple Sword Art Online films, but the recent ones are the Progressive film series. The first film, Sword Art Online -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night premiered last October 30, 2021. This is followed by its sequel, Sword Art Online -Progressive- Scherzo of the Dark Dusk, which was released recently last October 22, 2022. These films are produced by A-1 Pictures. They are meant to re-tell the story of Sword Art Online.
These two films are box office hits. The prequel managed to land #8 in the box office charts, while the sequel itself managed to climb onto #1 in its first weekend. It replaced One Piece Film Red after the latter’s consistent 11-week being the top-ranking film in Japan.
