The Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Synopsis

In the year 2199, Earth has now been reduced to a radioactive desert wasteland due to the attacks by aliens from the planet Gamilus. The remaining humans on Earth were then forced underground, and all hope seems to be lost. That is until a race of friendly aliens from the planet Iscandar gave humans blueprints of a powerful space battleship that can be instrumental in making Earth clean again. By extension, humanity will not go extinct.

Iscandar has the technology capable of cleaning the Earth from its radiation: The Cosmo Reverse System. The Earth Defense Force made it their goal to acquire this technology through the battleship which is named Yamato. Its interior contained state-of-the-art facilities with infinite energy.

The Space Battleship Yamato Background

The original The Space Battleship Yamato aired from October 6, 1974 to March 30, 1975 with a total of 26 episodes on Yomiuri TV. Manga artist Leiji Matsumoto is the creator and director of the series, while it was produced and written by Yoshinobu Nishizaki. Although initially the series did not garner much attention, it eventually became one of the most influential anime in Japan.

An analysis essay in 2013 by has resulted in that The Space Battleship Yamoto has caused a shift in animation when it comes to storytelling. It does not follow the typical “good vanquishes evil”, rather it gave the aliens from planet Gamilus a reason why they attacked Earth.

The Space Battleship Yamato‘s complex story and characters has served as the blueprint for popular anime that were released later on with the Sci-Fi genre such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Mobile Suit Gundam.
