Any fans looking forward to more Japanese AND Korean content in one? TOPCO, the company in charge of opening the famous online platform Toptoon, has just announced on September 28 that they as a company, plan to establish a new studio in Japan.
Toptoon is an online platform that publishes Korean web novels, which are most popularly known as webtoons or manhwas. Toptoon is known for publishing adult webtoons/web novels like Secret Class, Stepmother’s Friends, Boarding Diary, and many more. These novels are officially licensed in English on their website. TOPCO CEO Yoo Jung-suk emphasized the importance of targeting Japanese audiences. In his latest interview, he says:
The Japanese comic market is about 7 trillion Won which makes it inevitable that we should establish a studio and expand our investment in the Japanese market.” He added, “Looking at this long term, we’ll be cultivating talent early and building an infrastructure so they can produce high-quality content.

He went on to say that it is crucial to establish a studio with professional producers. This is so that the studio may be able to produce enjoyable physical comics for the general public both in Japan and the rest of the world.
TOPCO also stated in their announcement that they have begun securing web novel licenses and IPs through Nobel Pia, its subsidiary. This move was done in order to make adaptations for the larger worldwide market. Plans have been made in order to create more materials and serializations in countries like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, North America, and Europe.
When asked about their plans for animation, the company responded that they will be focusing on serializing webtoons and manga content and that plans for animated adaptations of the series under their company will be set in the far future.
