Madhouse’s previous tv anime adaptation aired in Japan in 1998 for 26 episodes. The anime was released on home video in North America in 2000. The series was first released on DVD by Geneon Entertainment (previously Pioneer), however Funimation has subsequently licensed it and released it on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. The series is now available on Crunchyroll, which was acquired by Sony’s Funimation Global Group AT&T. The anime first broadcasted in 2023 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim programming block.
The Trigun anime is based on the manga of the same name by Yasuhiro Nightow. The manga was published from 1995 to 1997 in Tokuma Shoten’s Monthly Shonen Captain magazine. Later in 1997, Shonengahosha’s Young King Ours magazine published Trigun Maximum, which lasted until 2007. The manga has been published in English by Dark Horse Comics.
Trigun: Badlands Rumble, the first new Trigun animation in over a decade, premiered in April 2010. The anime had its global premiere at Sakura-Con in April 2010, despite Studio Madhouse’s ambitions for the project dating back to 2005. The film was also shown on Cartoon Network’s Toonami programming block. The plot was originally written by original manga author Nightow and directed by Satoshi Nishimura.
