Trigger warning: mentions of suicide.

Misa Amane is probably one of the least-liked characters in Death Note, alongside Near. However, the reasons why the fans do not view them in a positive light differ greatly.

Yet, this did not stop the fans from wondering: what happened to Misa? This is because she did not make a significant appearance in the anime’s finale. Everyone knew what had happened to almost all of the characters in Death Note except for Misa.

So, in this article, we will answer the mystery of Misa’s ultimate fate.

Misa Was Seen in the Ending Credits

There are some fans who are unaware that Misa was actually seen in the ending credits of Death Note anime. She is dressed up in a more gothic fashion than usual as she sat on the train. She seemed to have a melancholic expression on her face, emphasized by her darker makeup.

Later on, she was standing on top of a skyscraper, beyond the safety rails. She seemed to be contemplating something before closing her eyes. Then the scene transitioned to let the audience see the skyscraper at the distance.

Her fate was not explicitly seen, but there was a heavy implication. Considering that she was standing beyond the safety rails, it can be assumed she intended to fall from such a height. In other words, she committed suicide. Presumably, when she found out Light had died, she did not seem to find purpose in her life anymore.

Creator Tsugumi Ohba Confirmed Misa’s Fate

Death Note creator, Tsugumi Ohba, stated in the book, “Death Note 13: How To Read” that Misa fell into depression and committed suicide after finding out Light had died. It was also said that her time of death occurred over a year after Light died.

Misa’s English voice actress, Shannon Chan-Kent, also shared in an interview with The Natural Aristocrat that Misa did commit suicide. The actress felt bad for the character she was playing, and did not even want Misa to kill herself.

Therefore, Misa in the ending credits have decided to end her life from falling off the skyscraper. The switch to see the skyscraper from the distance indicated how high she fell. It seemed to say to the audience that she already did it.

Misa’s Devotion to Light

Ultimately, it was Misa’s utter devotion to Light that served as her reason for ending her life. She made it her life’s goal to follow Light’s plan to create a new, perfect world. She was also madly in love with Light, doing everything she can to please him. In her eyes, Light was her savior. This was because Light killed the criminals responsible for murdering her family.

With Light dying, it can be assumed that she felt disillusioned and despair. She probably have never expected that Light can be killed. She probably even viewed him as a god who can make her life better without the criminals.

With all her hope crushed, it was no wonder that she felt lost and empty. She decided that there was nothing left in her life anymore. Poor Misa.
