Trigger warning: possible graphic mentions of gore

Parona was one of the first characters Fushi got to encounter, alongside the bright little girl, March. Unlike March though, we never get to see what happened to Parona immediately afterwards.

The last time we saw her was that she was fighting against Hayase and her Yanome soldiers. This is because she wanted to buy more time for Fushi so that he will be able to escape from Hayase’s clutches.

Eventually, Parona’s fate was revealed in the Jananda Island arc of To Your Eternity‘s Season 1. So what really happened to Parona?

Hayase Killed Parona

The first clue that Parona had died is when Fushi is able to transform into Parona during the tournament in Jananda Island. Fushi is only able to assume the form of the humans he has encountered if they had passed away.

This was further confirmed when Hayase reappeared, being the last opponent Fushi has to face in the tournament. Hayase even admitted it herself that she was the one responsible for Parona’s death. She also sickeningly called it her ‘gift’ to Fushi, as Fushi managed to acquire Parona’s form.

Brain’s Base

Sometime after Fushi left Ninannah, Parona has actively tried to intervene Hayase’s plans of pursuing Fushi. It is also possible that there have been fights between the two, with Hayase trying to gain more information about Fushi’s whereabouts. This was evident when Hayase’s hair becoming longer, and her face becoming gaunt when she killed Parona.

Brain’s Base

It can be deduced from the scene that Hayase planned a sneak attack on Parona and her allies in the dead of the night. This probably had caught Parona off-guard, which is why she eventually lost – with all of her allies dead.

Hayase has shown a sadistic side to herself when she explained how she killed Parona. She tied Parona’s hands and hung the latter from the ceiling. Hayase also contemplated the best way to kill off Parona, and even stated that she will feel “bad” if she cuts the stomach.

Brain’s Base

She eventually decided on beheading Parona. In the anime, with Hayase’s one slash of her knife, Parona’s head had come off. But Hayase said that she could not finish the job in a single blow, so we can assume that Hayase slashed her knife to slice off Parona’s head multiple times. This was not shown in the anime because of how disturbing it could be.

This meant that Parona had suffered a very painful death, in which Hayase acknowledges this. This puts the final nail in the coffin to ultimately trigger Fushi.

Parona’s Death Significant for Fushi

Parona’s death, even when it was briefly shown in Hayase’s flashback, is actually very significant for Fushi. It is the first time he entertained the idea of killing a person. He felt rage at the moment, and had let his emotions control him. This is why he is unable to think rationally in fighting against Hayase, which led to his loss.

It can also be said that Parona’s death also added to the weight in Fushi’s heart. At this point, he has lost many people dear to him. This is why he is so intent in rescuing Pioran from prison, and is easily annoyed by others interfering in his plans.

Brain’s Base

Parona has left an impact on Fushi due to her last advice to him: “The way you live isn’t something given to you! It’s something you win for yourself!” This is why Fushi is able to have his own thoughts and decisions of his own. This is evident when he is resisting his creator, The Beholder, whenever the latter is instructing him on something.

Parona also pondered on Fushi’s immortality, whether or not he will be able to find meaning in his life. Fushi also contemplated on this thought many times, often recalling Parona’s words to him. In other words, Parona contributed to Fushi in becoming more self-aware.

Brain’s Base

Let us take note that Fushi is someone who disliked the idea of killing people. But when he heard of Parona’s death, he actually did consider killing off Hayase. However, in the end, Fushi still had not managed to kill Hayase when given the chance.

This development of Fushi can make you wonder if he can be capable of killing people if it is necessary as the show progresses. Enemies are just sprouting everywhere against him, wanting to control him. Well, we can only stay tuned for future seasons and episodes.
