They are technically powerful beings with short lifespans. In The Ancient Magus’ Bride, there are a lot of questions surrounding the meaning behind a sleigh beggy. Due to being born as a sleigh beggy, Chise Hatori led a very miserable and traumatizing life. The effect of such identity on someone’s life was first portrayed negatively. However, Elias Ainsworth was able to introduce her to life that would make her appreciate herself for being born a sleigh beggy.
Sleigh Beggy is originally known as Sleih Beggey in the Manx language. The term Sleih Beggy in the Manx language refers to little people or is an umbrella term for Max Fairies. In The Ancient Magus’ Bride, the term is spelled differently in the anime adaptation and original manga. For the manga, they use the term slay vega instead of sleigh beggy. For some reason, a few fans preferred the former as they think of it as a cooler one.

One can say that Elias Ainsworth bought Chise Hatori for none other than her being a sleigh beggy. Elias is someone who rarely comes out of his home, specifically attending an auction at a black market. As a sleigh beggy, she is undoubtedly a rare individual and extraordinary in many ways. When Elias took her in, he anticipated fairies, preferably called neighbors, to instantly get close to her newly bought slave.
In episode one of the series, Ariel a fairy-like neighbor, and her friends suddenly pop up at Elias’ home to take a look at the apprentice of the mage. After being welcomed into Elias’ world, her life completely turned upside down. I can’t say for the best, but I can safely say that she took the most beautiful and interesting path.
All About Sleigh Beggies in The Ancient Magus’ Bride
As mentioned, all kinds of neighbors are attracted to a sleigh beggy. She is basically their queen bee. When Elias bought Chise people in the black market expressed their dismay that it was he who got to buy her. The news of Elias buying a sleigh beggy traveled fast among the neighbors in the rural area of England. Many of them immediately paid him a visit just to take a look and greet the rare human.

In episode two of season one, Elias and Chise went to a mage named Angelica Berley who owns a magical shop. She briefs Chise on a lot of knowledge pertaining to how magic is used and what a mage can do. By asking Hugo’s help, Angelica’s water spirit familiar, Chise tried manifesting her magical powers.
This didn’t turn out well because the floor in Angelica’s shop turned out being covered with crystal flowers. If Elias didn’t come right in things would have ended up worst. Angelica was surprised to know that Chise was a sleigh beggy because as I’ve said they are very rare.
Furthermore, since the magical creatures are very fond of her. She sometimes uses her magical abilities and traits to befriend or barter with them. For instance in episode seventeen, when Stella’s younger brother was taken by the Ashen Eye, they all went asking all kinds of neighbors they encounter in the forest for his brother.

In order to reassure them that these creatures provide the right answer, Chise gifted them with the crystal flower made from her excess magic. She also let them suck her blood in exchange for information. That is how valuable and pleasing she is in the eyes of fae or neighbors. Aside from these, what makes her so powerful as a sleigh beggy you ask?

Four Magical Abilities That Make Chise Hatori a Powerful Sleigh Beggy
Chise Hatori sure stands out from the rest of the characters not just because she is the protagonist. Aside from the well-loved character, Chise continuously develops her capabilities as a sleigh beggy and a mage as the story goes on. So, to know how much she had grown. Here are 5 of the magical abilities that make her a powerful sleigh beggy.
1. Possesses a Large Amount of Magical Power
As a sleigh beggy, Chise Hatori is known to have immense magical powers. This is the primary reason why faes or neighbors are highly affiliated with her and why she was sold for five million pounds. Chise’s body naturally absorbs magical energy which is why learning how to express it through magical techniques is essential.
However, the consequence of possessing a large number of magical powers is her life. Sleigh beggies have a short lifespan due to their body getting weaker as they continue to use and absorb their magic which will eventually result in them reaching their limit.
With massive magical powers, Chise can also imbue even her singing which put Elias into a deep sleep for a few days. In episode twelve of season one, she was able to magically create a phoenix burning in a fire as the means to travel back home. Even Lindel was impressed by how strong she is.
Oh, dear. I though she was quite, but she might actually be a wolverine.

2. Chise Hatori is a Notable Sight User
Chise is a very fortunate sleigh beggy since she was also blessed with the sight. This magic ability allows her to unintentionally see supernatural beings. As long as these faes do not actively hide themselves Chise can perceive them. The sight also grants her the ability to interact with them. When she was bought and taken to Elias’ household, she was able to see all the magical creatures wandering inside their home.
There aren’t that many people who have this kind of ability which makes her a very unique sleigh beggy. A sleigh beggy is a special individual to fairies or neighbors. She can see magical beings that normal people cannot and at the same time acts like a magnet to them. But, there is a downside to it. It is sometimes quite difficult for her to pretend not to see them especially when she’s with normal people like her friend Stella.

3. The Ability to Travel through Minds
Being born as a sleigh beggy also granted her the ability to travel through the unconscious mind. Although Chise and her familiar Ruth can also do this through the pact they have made. She once did it even before that. Before becoming Ruth’s master, Chise was able to see the memories of Ruth and his previous owner, Isabel. It was shown in the previous episodes of The Ancient Magus’ Bride that Chise can also travel between the border of the living and the dead through the mind.
In episode twelve of season one, Lindel invited Chise in the Dragons’ Aerie to finally carve and create her wand. By touching the wand made by Nevil’s branch, she then again met the dead dragon and was able to have some meaningful conversation. This ability of hers also allowed her to communicate with the series’ anti-hero, Cartaphillus, in a dream-like scenario.

4. Magically Transform Into an Animal
Through a magical ability called skinwalking. The Ashen Eye is an ancient fae who seems to wander the desert and wields a wooden staff. When he paid the bonehead mage a visit he had hidden intentions. He hands out an animal skin imbued with magic that turned Chise into a wolf to test the sleigh beggy’s loyalty to Elias.
Moreover, in episode eighteen of season one, Elias Ainsworth felt jealous of Chise and Stella’s closeness. He went out of the house and hide in the forest. Thus, in order to easily find him Chis willingly transformed into a wolf and this time she was able to do it perfectly. Did she find Elias? Yes, she did.
