Who Is the Villain in Moriarty the Patriot?

The main villain in the series is none other than William James Moriarty also known as the Lord of Crime. But, the fantasy crime Japanese series is not that different from other anime for it also has more than one antagonist. True enough, up until the final episode of the series, a list of villains was able to be convicted for the senseless crimes they have committed through the plans of the napoleon of crime.

Since the beginning of the series, William and his brothers, Albert and Louis, weren’t painted as pure saint-like characters. In fact, burning the Moriarty household and everyone in it including Albert’s parents already conveyed something. Their first-ever crime together was already an indication that these kids will definitely grow into villains disguised as nobles. Yup, not your ordinary kids.

William was even caught in his young villain era by Albert James Moriarty inside the orphanage. Before becoming an adoptive family member, Albert caught William teaching the kids in the orphanage to fight and kill the nobles who would try to hurt them. For some reason, I can see the good in this advice of young William. However, teaching kids to kill is never the best choice for revenge.

William James Moriarty together with his allies was both the protagonist and antagonist of the Japanese series. But, this doesn’t mean that they were born to be evil and notorious criminals of the British Empire. Moriarty the Patriot has featured other antagonists who pushed them to be the villains of their own story.

The Villains of Each Arc of Moriarty the Patriot

Moriarty the Patriot’s protagonist, William James Moriarty, his brothers, and other allies strongly portray in the series that what you give is what you get. Here are all the villains who definitely got the eye-for-an-eye payback from the crime consultant himself.

1. The Scarlet Eye Arc

To start, the Moriarty family was never that good to begin with, except for Albert. Hence, little did they know that their continuous negative actions, towards those in the lower class, especially the original William, would lead them to their cruel end. The original William James Moriarty is the main villain during the Scarlet Eye Arc.

Although, the Earl and Countess Moriarty also belittled the poor. Their youngest son went completely overboard by inflicting physical abuse, such as forcing his maids and adoptive siblings to stab a fork right into their hands. Moreover, he also attempted to pin a crime on his adoptive brothers. The original William James Moriarty went inside the room of William and Louis completely unaware that he will face his death under his older brother’s hands, Albert. One can say that the whole Moriarty plan would cease to exist if not for this character.

2. The Durham Arc

The series opened with three heartless villains, Earl Argleton, or the Chavi Slasher, followed by Baron Lenny Dublin and Dudley Bale. Argleton is a serial killer who targets young lower or middle-class kids by kidnapping and mercilessly murders them. Another is a secret crime lord who works as an administrative assistant at a university while blackmailing the students’ families for donations and self-indulgence. On one hand, Dublin, or Viscount of Belfor is the man responsible for the death of his gardener’s only child by depriving them of the chance to let his family doctor cure the sick child.

This arc was a strong way to open up the series since it gives emphasis on how those who are in the higher ranks are taking advantage of their position. Argleto, Dublin, and Bale are all vile noblemen with no sign of humanity in them.

If not for William and his allies, these men would still be lurking around the streets of London continuing their heinous crimes and behaviors. Did they go to jail? No. Most criminals that William and his allies targeted didn’t end up in prison. Instead, they end up six feet below the ground where the protagonist believes they deserved to be. As their punishments, the three villains from this arc faced death at the hands of their victim’s families.

3. The Noahtic Arc

With Sherlock Holmes and William James Moriarty boarding the same ship, this arc surely made a huge development in the series’ plot. Blitz Enders was criminal hunting down and killing lower ranks as a hobby. This British nobleman didn’t see the significance of the lower ranks’ lives and constantly treats them as animals.

Knowing that Enders will be one of the passengers of the Noahtic cruise ship. William mapped out his plan by making the cruise ship their center stage. Ender’s crime was exposed in front of an audience filled with people from the lower and upper ranks. Like the other villains, Blitz Enders didn’t go through the legal process of acquainting a criminal. Instead, he fell off the ocean and died with a little help from William and Sebastian Moran, a skilled sniper.

4. The Milverton Arc

Charles Augustus Milverton also known as the King of Blackmailers is the second most significant villain in the series. The King of Blackmailers executed a plan that led William to uncover his real identity to the public and proceed with the final stage of their plan. This mischievous man is both the enemy of Sherlock Holmes and William James Moriarty. A corrupted nobleman who cares only about himself.

The Heroic Villain in Moriarty the Patriot

I know that the number of villains in Moriarty the Patriot is not that much compared to the other anime series. However, these villains’ crimes were too much even for a man like the Lord of Crime. The crime consultant is a criminal like most characters listed above; however, unlike them, he is no evil. The crime consultant and his allies were forced to commit the necessary evil to reach their common goal: an equal society.

He may have the main villain of the series. We cannot deny that his actions be it something that we agreed to or not was for the good. He was just like most of us who wants nothing but the best for society. Well, If you think about it, William is not alone in committing crimes for the sake of a better society or peace. Many anime characters have also done the same thing in order to fulfill their goals similar to William.

Were his actions legally and morally right? Personally, No. Lives are sacred; however, William still sacrificed lives along the way which is never right. Were his intentions good? A hundred percent. The society he aspired to rebuild prioritizes and recognizes the existence of all citizens, whether they may be rich or not. His plans were a big step in achieving a wave of long-term peace and equality among everyone.

However, for some, a crime is a crime. Unlike the wicked victims of his plan, William didn’t pay for what he have done inside the jail but was written to have a fresh start in another country. But one thing I can assure you is that our main villain in the series has never committed a selfish crime. That’s for sure.

Indeed, he was no evil but is undoubtedly a sinner like some or maybe most of us. He may be evil in the eyes of the people but was able to be their unknown savior. William James Moriarty is yet another character who believes that sometimes you-gotta-do-what-you-gotta-do.
