Many Haikyuu fans wonder, why did Hinata decide to go to training camp? Though it certainly is a cringe-worthy moment, the Shiratorizawa training camp did wonders for him in ways fans least expected.
Improvement and the continuous desire to be better than your past self is one of the most striking plot lines of the hit series, Haikyuu. Haikyuu became the talk of the town during the height of the pandemic in 2020, and since, many fans have fallen in love with the story of young men who are working hard to pursue their dreams every day.
Haikyuu gave many a feeling of comfort while we were all cooped up in our homes with dalgona, dancing TikToks. But there was one scene in the anime which many described as the most embarrassing moment of the show, they had to get up and leave their bed and process it. That particular scene was when Hinata joined the Shiratorizawa training camp, uninvited.
Hinata Shoyo is the protagonist of Haikyuu. He’s the small, orange-haired dude who spikes with his eyes closed, but still somehow gets the ball where it needs to go (thanks to his awesome setter, Kageyama). Before entering Karasuno High School, the school where his Idol the little giant graduated from, Hinata used to practice volleyball with the girls in his middle school because there weren’t really any boy volleyball players. He tossed the ball anywhere and jumped whenever he could. Later, upon joining the team at Karasuno, Hinata learned that though his spikes and jumps were indeed strong, he wasn’t a strong enough player to be able to beat the big shots at the nationals.

After the Shiratorizawa match, two of his teammates, Tsukishima and Kageyama, both receive an invitation to participate in a training camp for a selected number of days. Upon hearing this, Hinata expected that he, too, would get an invitation, but unfortunately, he did not receive any. He was disappointed, of course, but Karasuno’s team captain Daichi cheered him up.
However, when the episode of the training camp opened up, the animation pans to an extremely cheerful, small, orange-haired dude inside the Shiratorizawa gym. Hinata attended the training camp uninvited.

This matter was of course discussed between the coaches of the respective teams immediately, but Hinata was set on being able to hone his skills that he insisted on being there even if it meant he had to be a water boy and a literal floor manager as he was tasked to pick up balls and clean the floor while others trained. However, many still question: Why.
The answer is simple. Hinata has known and loved volleyball all his life. He has always found ways to continuously upgrade his skills so that he won’t be a setback for the team. Attending Shiratorizawa’s training camp is the simplest avenue for him to be able to do that. The results of him being a water-boy and a ball fetcher showed when he was finally able to land a perfect receive during Season 5’s battle with Inarizaki High.
