TRIGGER WARNING: MENTIONS OF SUICIDE
As we all know, Bungo Stray Dogs’ quirkiest character, Dazai Osamu has a hobby of attempting to kill himself. Though it’s not AT ALL a nice thing to do, it’s been his hobby ever since he was introduced to the show.
An interesting fact about this question is that it was actually answered by Bungo Stray Dogs’ illustrator, Sango Harukawa. In an interview a while back, Harukawa was asked why he drew Dazai Osamu with bandages, and he answered it was because Dazai was a suicidal maniac.

According to Sango Harukawa, he decided to draw the characters based on their characteristics and based on the setting assigned to them by Kafka Asagiri (the manga’s author), like how he drew white hair for Atsushi and bandages for Dazai:
“The special thing about this series was that apart from the settings from Asagiri, the characters probably should have certain aspects of the authors they were based on, but I tried to draw them based on the character settings first when doing up the initial drafts. For example with Atsushi, I gave him white hair with the image of a white tiger and a long dangling belt that looks like a tail. For Dazai, I wrapped him up in bandages because of his suicide mania and took notes with other items. I drew what came to mind from the character settings first, before changing the weird parts.”
If you haven’t noticed, Bungo Stray Dogs characters are actually named after real-life classical authors, and Dazai Osamu being a suicidal maniac may be a characteristic that was mirrored from the real Dazai Osamu, an author who died of Suicide. But that’s just speculation.
If you want to know more about Dazai and his past, there’s this tumbler post that pretty much sums up the whole reason why Dazai wears bandages and other things about his dark era that you might want to read about.
