Megumin is an ambitious girl who aspires to slay a dragon like the woman who inspired her to pursue explosion magic. Many powerful wizards or heroes gained the courage to mold their talent and skills because of a significant person in their lives. But, did you know that the person Megumin looked up to most was a goddess but wasn’t necessarily good?
Following the footsteps of the person whom they idolize plays a crucial role in the lives of the protagonists in becoming someone whom others greatly respect due to the talent they possessed. Megumin, one of the main characters in KonoSuba, is a gifted archwizard who possesses talent like no other. However, her deep love (or should I say obsession) for explosion makes people doubt her ability. She is one of the few, strong, and pretty odd members of Kazuma Satou’s party.
Due to the character of Crimson Demons prioritizing coolness above anything else, she came off too strong for Kazuma which made him not agree instantly with her joining the team. However, their journey as a team continues to become more thrilling and fun. As the series goes on, Megumin’s obsession with explosion magic is highlighted more. This even made Kazuma feel that she was useless at times. However, her passion for this type of magic will surely not go to waste. This is because Megumin has the biggest potential to someday reach a level similar to a Demon King’s General.

Who Taught Megumin the Explosion Magic?
Megumin’s passion for explosion magic was because of an evil goddess. Megumin did not just wake up one day and awakened her obsession for destructive magic. As a child, she didn’t have much inspiration around her in terms of being a wizard. She grew up in a non-affluent family. Her parents are barely making it just to give her and her sister, Komekko, everything they need. However, poverty didn’t become the reason for Megumin to abandon her dream or waste the life given to her.
As the new star of the series’ newest season, KonoSuba: An Explosion on This Wonderful World!, the life before she became the most reliable party of Kazuma is currently being unveiled. The new season gave the fans an astounding episode one by showing the truth behind Megumin’s obsession with explosion magic. It was revealed that a woman slayed a dragon in front of young Megumin leaving her with eyes beaming with admiration.
Wolbach used his destructive explosion magic to save Megumin from a magic beast. Although the young Megumin was the one who got saved, Wolbach was willing to grant her a wish to show her gratitude for supposedly unsealing her. Wolbach may have claimed to be a powerful archwizard, but she wasn’t able to grant her absurd requests like conquering the world, becoming the demon king, or growing huge breasts like her.
But, Megumin later settled on a wish that would later change her life. Wolbach truthfully told her that the explosion spell was not something she can recommend because of its negative effects. However, there was no reason for her not to learn it, especially when Wolbach declared it the strongest spell.

Who is Wolbach?
It turns out that Wolbach was not kidding when she told Megumin that she is powerful and popular. Just like Kazuma and Megumi’s close friend, Wiz, Wolbach is part of the Demon King’s army. She is one of the eight generals of the Demon King and was known to be a Goddess like Aqua. As a former goddess and a current demon king general, it can be said that Wolbach may have had some reasons to take the enemy’s path and leave the good side. But, this doesn’t mean that she is evil.
Like Wiz, Wolbach is kindhearted as seen during her encounter with Megumin. Despite being called an evil god, she showed patience and pure humbleness to Megumin. Wolbach did not treat Megumin in a very arrogant way and even showed that she cares for her future when the young Megumin expressed her desire to learn explosion magic. In episode five of season three, Megumin cast her first explosion spell to save Yunyun and Komekko. By successfully witnessing herself being able to produce a beautiful explosion like Wolbach, she was more determined to master it.
Read Megumin’s first incantation which memorized a long time ago for her first explosion magic:
O Heaven and Earth! Do not ever forget this name. My name is Megumin. I am am a prodigy among the Crimson Demon Clan, and someone who can control the explosion magic. Now take this! Explosion!
Megumin (Season 3: Episode 4)
However, before casting her first-ever explosion. In the light novel, Wolbach kept her promise to teach her the strongest spell when Megumin was still young. Although she was capable of escaping the Crimson Demon Village, Wolbach intentionally got herself captured by the Crimson Demons to teach Megumin the explosion magic closely.

Their connection doesn’t end there because Komekko, the younger sister of Megumin, also unseals the other half of Wolbach. In season three, Komekko was able to unseal a cat she thought was just a normal house pet. But, it later turned out that the cat she took home and named Chomusuke embodies the Goddess of Sloth and Violence, Wolbach.
Will Megumin someday reunite with Wolbach? Of course! Megumin and Wolbach’s paths will once again cross, but this time, Megumin is now a full-fledged adventurer. According to the light novel, Megumin, and Wolbach didn’t have a touching reunion instead ended up becoming each other’s archenemy.
Will Megumin Learn Other Types of Magic?
No, Megumin is determined to master explosion magic above anything else. As the top of their class, Megumin has the biggest potential when it comes to learning advanced magic. However, her fateful encounter with Wolbach made her choose the destructive path and someday cast a spell as powerful as hers. This is not a punch to the moon for the young adventurer because Megumin is a true prodigy of the Crimson Demon Clan. Despite growing up in a humble family, Megumin confidently joined the academy and always aimed to be number one.
With her goal to master the explosion magic, she would always put beyond the amount of effort and intelligence needed in all of their activities. However, even with the confidence that she possessed, some people still mocked her goal of becoming a master of explosion magic. In episode one of season three, Megumin’s teacher, Pucchin, advised him to not learn explosion magic at all. Pucchin highlighted that learning is just magic used for fun or jokes because even if Megumin learns it her whole life, she will never have the opportunity to use it. The whole class laughs at her, but she knew better. Why? Because Megumin witnessed the power this spell possess.
She insisted on pursuing her goal by never stopping herself from reading all the books that would give her even the slightest knowledge about the explosion spell. Megumin strongly believes that all other types of magic are inferior to explosion magic. She expressed to her rival and friend, Yunyun, that it is the only spell that could live up to the title of the strongest magic. As an adventurer, Megumin knew that those who use destructive magic are often refused by different party members.

Luckily, Kazuma was kind enough to take her in and was completely understanding of Megumin’s choices. Kazuma may have some things to say about his party members, but he always showed them the support that they needed. Megumin can only cast a single explosion per day because it requires a huge amount of mana which she does not still possess.
However, in KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! Legend of Crimson, Megumin felt sorry for not being able to use another magic that resulted in Kazuma dying. Thus, she personally requested him to upgrade her skill to learn advanced magic and to permanently seal her explosion magic away. But, Kazuma knew that regardless of the consequences, Megumin is at her happiest whenever she cast the explosion magic. At the end of the movie, Megumin was able to cast a spell that reached the outer space proving how talented she is as a future Master of Explosion Spell.
For Megumin, the explosion spell that Wolbach cast made her witness a destructive kind of magic that was overwhelmingly violent, but beautiful and powerful. Aside from mastering it, she also made it her goal to someday meet Wolbach again and show her how much she has improved throughout the years.
Megumin is an adventurer who is persistent, has little self-control, is talented, and someone who will prefer to die instead of not casting an explosion spell each day. The explosion magic has not only become Megumin’s most powerful ability, but it also became her lifeline and comfort. Therefore, as her story continues in the series’ newest season, viewers will surely witness Megumin continuously increasing her skill as a future Master of the Explosion Spell.
