Yes! As much as we want her not to die, Chise’s life was always meant to be short-lived. This is the curse she carries in exchange for the power she didn’t even know she had at the beginning. Her short lifespan is the consequence that comes with her being born as a sleigh beggy. However, things turned out in the most unexpected way when she gained another curse.
The dark fantasy anime revolves around the story of Elias Ainsworth and Chise Hatori. Chise was abandoned by everyone, including her family, which is why she thought of ending her life. If you know her story, it feels like Chise was born to be miserable especially since she was gifted with powers she didn’t even wish to have.

Elias Ainsworth bought Chise Hatori for five million pounds with a goal in mind. Sleigh beggies are very pricey to sorcerers and mages in the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Their bodies are capable of absorbing a large quantity of magical energy and are able to manifest it. This is the main reason why faes or neighbors treat Chise as a queen bee. They all gather around her and gladly accept her blood or excess magic as a token of gratitude. That’s how precious Chise Hatori is in the world of Elias.
Compared to the life that abandoned her, the life Elias introduced her to will never do the same thing. But, her fate as a sleigh beggy has long decided that no matter how mundane or beautiful the life she lives she will not be given much chance to live together with her friends and family.

Why Will Chise Hatori Die?
When one only hears about the pros of being a sleigh beggy, one would wish to become like Chise Hatori. I mean, who would decline the ability to harness a huge amount of magical energy, right? Chise has proven in many instances from season one that she is indeed a powerful mage. From magically creating a giant burning phoenix to saving her friends multiple times, Chise deserves the magical power she has.
However, the thing that she doesn’t deserve is the consequence that comes with it. They say with great power, comes with great responsibility. Well, Spider-man was never wrong in saying that because it is correct. Chise Hatori may not be a superhero but she is a hero to the people around her. Hence, it’s quite saddening to think that the price she has to pay for being born a sleigh beggy is her own life.

The great responsibility that comes with Chise’s magical prowess is the ability to maintain her life as long as she can. Elias bought Chise knowing that she is a sleigh beggy since it is common knowledge among faes or neighbors that sleigh beggies have a short lifespan.
A sleigh beggy absorbs too much magical energy that even their bodies cannot contain which results in them getting weaker and later on to death. Elias aimed to conduct an experiment that would determine Chise’s fate. As an experiment, the ancient mage wanted to test out his abilities and see if he can extend the life of a sleigh beggy.

Was Chise aware that she was bought solely for his experiment? Yes and even with her knowing the true reason, she still stayed beside him. In episode five of season one, Mikhail Renfred and Alice Swayne were the first ones who informed Chise about Elias’ intention. That everything was all for an experiment. Chise didn’t feel the warmth of having a family or home since her family left her all alone.

Therefore, regardless of the reason why Elias bought her is nothing because he found a home through him. Elias’ determination to keep his promise strengthen when they became closer to each other. But, it wasn’t Elias who gave Chise the chance to continue her life, rather it was the series’ anti-hero, Joseph or also known as Cartaphilus.
The Immortal Curse That Breaks Her Destiny As a Sleigh Beggy
Joseph is the villain of the series The Ancient Magus’ Bride. Like Chise and Elias, he is also a mage. He fused with the man whom he saved before named Cartaphilus making them one. From then, Cartaphilus, or as he prefers to call him, Joseph, was cursed and made the people around him suffer as well. Joseph loses parts of his memory after fusing with Cartaphilus. Therefore, he went on a journey to find a way to break it.
His curse is quite troublesome because he truly can live a long life. However, his body continuously rots, losing his empathy gradually and at the same time, he is always in pain because of it. When Chise’s lifespan shortened more due to the dragon’s curse. Joseph offered him an option that would allow them to get what they want.
Since Chise no longer wants to accept her fate and wished for a longer lifespan to spend with her loved ones, she accepted Joseph’s offer. Joseph wanted to die and Chise wanted to live. That’s basically it.

Thus, Joseph wanted the cursed arm of Chise to gain the dragon’s curse that will let him die in exchange for his eye which has the immortal curse. In episode twenty-two of season one, Joseph personally removed Chise’s eye and replaced it with his.
This transplant granted Chise the immortality that Joseph has. Although Chise’s eye still turned green even after gaining Joseph’s eye. He guaranteed that the immortal curse he gave her is something that cannot be undone and that the sleigh beggy is in full control of it.

Hence, Chise Hatori will no longer die due to her body absorbing too much magical energy. So, to all the Ancient Magus fans out there, you can now all breathe in relief because our favorite sleigh beggy can now live as long as her lover, Elias. Chise will and always be the vulnerable girl to Elias and her friends. However, it is good to know that she will no longer forcefully abandon the path she choose and began to love.
The Japanese animated series by Yamazaki Kore ended happily for all the season one characters and everything was just calmer in the final episode. But, with season two coming in a few weeks left, let’s expect the unexpected. Maybe Chise’s fate is even brighter with her short life span curse being broken and we may witness a brand new Chise Hatori in the brand new season.
