They will, eventually. Chrome and Ruri definitely have feelings for each other. Hence, wedding bells will be ringing for the two sooner than you think. However, as of now, both of them are too preoccupied with other things such as saving the world, particularly Chrome. But, when all the rebuilding of modern civilization is finished. Chrome will finally gain the courage to propose to her childhood best friend in the most sudden way at another wedding. Yup, not theirs.
Chrome is very much like his mentor, Senku. Maybe before meeting the young scientist from modern times, Chrome still had time to think about Ruri. However, from their cool scientific invention to another cooler invention. It seems like Chrome isn’t that ready to enter an intimate relationship with Ruri and is more ready to do some science. But, this doesn’t mean that nothing will happen between the two at all. This is because they have shared some moments in the anime adaptation possibly teasing their future relationship.

Ruri’s illness is probably the first step that made Chrome and Senku best friends. Chrome and Kohaku were desperate in saving Ruri who didn’t have much time left. Hence, Chrome was determined to assist Senku with all his scientific experiments just to save her childhood best friend and soon fiance, Ruri. The determination of Chrome to cure Ruri is just the first among all the moments that showed that there is potential between these two characters.
The History between Chrome and Ruri
Chrome and Ruri already have a shared history together enough for them to get to know each other. This means that a possible bloom of romance is not that impossible for the two. In fact, even all of the people around them are rooting for the two to someday tie the knot because of witnessing how they grew up with each other’s presence.
Childhood Best Friends
With the village having a population of not more than fifty, a close bond among all the villagers is expected. However, the bond between Kohaku, Riri, and Chrome was much closer than the rest. With almost belonging to the same age, we can safely assume that these three have played a couple of times in the fields to kill time. Hence, it is also possible that the feelings Ruri and Chrome both have for each other are because of their connection ever since they were kids.

Ruri always endures her sickness even as a child. Many people from their village have also told her that her illness will prevent her from reaching adulthood. When Chrome found out about this from Ruri herself, he promised her to someday find a cure for her illness. He told Ruri that he will do anything just to fulfill that promise. This can imply that although Chrome has always been a curious kid that made him follow his path to being a renowned scientist. He was also influenced by her dearest childhood friend, Ruri.
Chrome Fights to be the Village Chief and Ruri’s Husband
Ruri may not have much spotlight in the series. But, one of the early arcs of Dr. Stone actually revolved around her. As mentioned earlier, one of the first scientific inventions that Chrome and Senku worked on is the one for Ruri’s illness. The people of The Kingdom of Science led by Senku worked day and night to perfect the cure-all sulfa drug or antibiotic. This was another one of Senku’s invention that would save the life of the Ishigami Village priestess. However, since Senku has not yet gained the trust of the people, particularly Ruri’s father, they had to fight in a tournament to get the medicine to Ruri.

The Grand Bout or the Village Game is traditionally held by the Ishigami Village once per generation. This game aimed to determine the next village chief. Before Magma became an ally of Senku, he was once their enemy and was the person who openly told them that he would also kill Ruri. Magma being the strongest contender in the Grand Bout was a real challenge for The Kingdom of Science, even for a physically gifted woman like Kohaku.
Kohaku trained the village guard brothers, Ginro and Kinro, to increase their chances of winning the throne. However, she had also expressed that she wants Chrome more than anyone to train for the game and marry her sister. Why? Because Chrome and Ruri may not have fully realized it yet, but Kohaku always knew that they both have feelings for each other.

Chrome is not the kind of man who wants attention and would get jealous. He is a very selfless scientist who wants only to save Ruri even if it takes her marrying someone else.
I can ask for nothing more than the cure-all science drug to save Ruri so she can live a good life. I’m the genius sciencer, after all.
Chrome to Kohaku and Senku Ishigami (Season 1: Episode 10)
True enough, it wasn’t Chrome who won the village game even though it was him whom everyone rooted to win the game. With Kohaku not making it in time, Senku was the one who fought Chrome. But, Chrome’s previous fight made him super exhausted which made him lose to a not so physically fit guy like Senku. Did Chrome feel bad? No. As stated, Chrome is a selfless man. No amount of jealousy can ever change his kind heart, specifically for Ruri.

Chrome’s Awaited Confession for Ruri Through the Phone
The Communication Arc of the series features the planning of both Tsukasa and Senku’s sides before their battle. Although this part of the story is more on the war planning, Ruri and Chrome also shared a short but very sweet moment. Since the goal of Senku was a bloodless war. He decided to take the matter into the hands of science. Together with his people, Senku made a communication tool that would allow them to exchange information during their battle.

Of course, before using the invention testing it out first should be the main priority which it was. Senku and his team tested out their stone age cellular phone. From The Kingdom of Science to the Ishigami Village, Chrome and Ruri were the first ones to be on the phone. Therefore, you can expect that something is about to happen.

Ginro being Ginro. He teased Chrome that the cellular phone allows him to say whatever he wants to say to Ruri including his true feelings. Ruri, Senku, and the others were overhearing these cute little teases of Ginro and were also expecting the most awaited confession from Chrome. And yes, a confession did happen and no it wasn’t a love confession. In episode twenty-four of season two, Chrome confessed his undying love for science instead of what the others and even Ruri were possibly expecting.
Ruri… Did you see that, Ruri? Pretty awesome, right? Science is insane.
Chrome to Ruri (Season 1: Episode 24)
This confession left everyone in dismay. But, let’s admit that Chrome is very dense when dealing with his own feelings and this scene definitely shows that. However, it is good to know that the whole village is in favor of their relationship and Ruri nervously blushing before and after that confession definitely shows that she too expected a different type of confession.
Chrome *almost* Dying
Chrome’s selflessness was taken to the next level when he sacrificed himself for Gen and Magma. After realizing that the skilled archer of Tsukasa named Ukyo’s intention, he decided to use himself as bait in order for his friends to get away. This act of bravery from Chrome resulted in him being imprisoned in Tsukasa’s Empire.

Even though Chrome does not possess physical prowess like Kohaku, he decided to escape Tsukasa’s Empire on his own. Hence, using the power of science he came up with a scientific way that would save himself and reunite with his friends. Thankfully, Chrome was able to reunite with his friends before they even tried to save him from being imprisoned.
In episode seven of season two, Chrome finally arrived at where his friends were camped in as they prepare for the war. Everyone was glad to see him but it was only Ruri who noticed the blood-like stain on the side of his mouth. Chrome being Chrome, he pretended to throw up blood and Ruri was the first one who assisted him.

All the playing in the fields was fruitful enough to save him because even Ruri pointed out that the red-colored water felt familiar. This is because Chrome once tried them out and throws-up the same red-colored water when he was out playing with Ruri when they were kids. Indeed, a science that came from experience.
