NHK has announced that the anime adaptation of Kaoru Fukaya’s Yomawari Neko (Nightwatch Cat) manga will premiere on the channel in March. The anime will consist of 15 five-minute episodes, airing in batches of five on March 14, 20, and 27.

The anime will feature Takayuki Yamada as Heizō Endō and Atsumi Tanezaki as Jūrō. Kazuma Taketani is directing the anime, with Hiroko Kanasugi writing the scripts and Ken’ichi Maeyamada composing the music. The animation production is being handled by Shogakukan Music & Digital Entertainment. The theme song will be a cover of Kiyoshiro Imawano’s “Jump” song.
Yomawari Neko is an 8-panel manga that follows a cat who is drawn to the scent of tears and goes toward anyone who is crying in order to comfort or encourage them. The manga won the Short Work Prize at the 21st Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize awards in 2017, and has sold over 630,000 copies.
Fukaya began posting the manga on Twitter in 2015, and Kodansha began publishing it on its MoAE site in 2016. The ninth volume of the manga was released on November 22.
For readers who may not be familiar with the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, it is an annual manga prize awarded in Japan that honors the life and works of manga artist Osamu Tezuka.
