10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – Swordsmith Village Arc
This anime is a no-brainer. Every year, Demon Slayer undoubtedly provides us with amazing anime sequences and plots that leave us craving, yearning, and thirsting for more!
In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s third season, the Swordsmith Village Arc, Tanjiro and Nezuko journey to a remote village to repair Tanjiro’s sword after battling Gyutaro and Daki, two Upper Rank demons. Amidst the tranquil setting, they face new challenges when confronted by more Upper Rank demons, joined by allies such as Muichiro Tokito, Mitsuri Kanroji, and Genya Shinazugawa. While the season delivers stunning animation and thrilling action sequences, it may lack significant plot developments. Nevertheless, the emotional depth and camaraderie between characters make it a compelling addition to the Demon Slayer series.
9. Mobile Suit: Gundam
Gundam was probably one of the shows that made the fans ponder on a lot of things last year. It left quite an impression on those who watched it and even left some crying.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury stands out as a versatile show that caters to various interests. Despite its connection to a complex franchise, it excels in its standalone appeal, offering a diverse blend of romance, comedy, sci-fi, politics, and drama. The series delves into the lives of military school students, gradually exposing them to harsh realities and societal issues. Through the protagonist Suletta Mercury, it explores themes of abuse, oppression, and power dynamics, all while paying homage to Gundam’s rich history and attracting a new generation of fans.
8. Blue Lock
Given Blue Lock’s extremely successful season, it is not a surprise that this amazing sports anime would be making headlines once again as it explores the diversities of such a simple sport anyone would love—Football.
Watching Blue Lock was an experience in and of itself. If you had not watched it while it was airing, let me be the one to tell you that you definitely had missed out on a lot of mind-blowing animation that would just leave you gasping for air! Once in a while, there will come a sports anime that will be beyond famous not only for its unique plot but most especially for the various characters it introduces to its audience. Blue Lock nailed it when it came to character development and showing off just how much the characters in the show were dedicated to the sport they loved.
7. Spy x Family
Being another one of the seasonal shows we love and adore, Spy xFamily nailed it again this year as it embarked on its Princess Lorelai Arc. This, personally, is my most beloved arc as it showed just how much family (though technically still fake) meant to Loid, Anya, and Yor as they showed off their skills individually just to protect both their identity and the people they branded as family.
In its second season, Spy x Family follows Anya’s quest to become an imperial scholar and secure an audience with political leader Donovan Desmond to aid her father’s secret mission. What sets Spy x Family apart is its ability to turn ordinary moments into high-stakes missions, infusing tension into even the most mundane activities. Whether it’s concealing a gunshot wound during a date or embarking on a thrilling quest for macaroons during a school assignment, the series masterfully blends espionage with everyday life. Characters like Anya, with her expressive facial expressions and endearing antics, add a heartwarming touch to the series, emphasizing the importance of family bonds amidst the chaos.
6. Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End
Step into the enchanting world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, where every episode is a journey of discovery and emotion. From the outset, this anime captured my heart with its captivating storyline based on the fantasy manga by Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. Join Frieren, an elven mage, and her band of adventurers as they vanquish a maniacal demon king, setting the stage for an epic tale of courage and companionship.
Directed by the talented Keiichirō Saitō, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is more than just a fantasy adventure—it’s a beautifully crafted exploration of life’s complexities. As Frieren embarks on her solo quest to master magic, she bears witness to the passage of time, grappling with the inevitable loss of her friends to old age. Through each episode, we are drawn deeper into Frieren’s world, sharing in her joys, sorrows, and moments of self-discovery.
5. Oshi no Ko
Now, THIS anime was making headlines last year when it first came out. Aka Asaka has done it again, and to tell you the truth, as bizarre and unique as the plot was, this show captivated many anime fans’ hearts—it was probably Ai’s eyes though–but still.
While Kaguya-sama delights in inducing laughter and cheers for young love, Oshi no Ko takes a darker turn, exploring the harsh realities of the entertainment industry with riveting twists and stunning animation from studio Doga Kobo.
The plot revolves around Ai Hoshino, a young idol who relocates due to an unexpected pregnancy, only to find herself entangled in a mysterious web involving her devoted fan, who is reincarnated as one of her twin children. As the twins navigate the complexities of the industry, unaware of each other’s identities, suspense and intrigue abound. Dive into the gripping 80-minute(!) first episode to experience the series’ allure firsthand, making Oshi no Ko a must-watch for fans of mystery and drama alike.
4. Hell’s Paradise
Looking for a gripping dark fantasy anime akin to Jujutsu Kaisen? Dive into the supernatural ninjutsu horror of Hell’s Paradise, based on Yuji Kaku’s acclaimed manga. Set in Edo-period Japan, follow the journey of Gabimaru the Hollow, a notorious ninja assassin offered a chance at redemption by locating a mystical elixir on the treacherous island of Shinsenkyo. Teaming up with other death row criminals, Gabimaru and his partner Sagiri must navigate the island’s perils to secure their freedom.
While the series starts slowly, Hell’s Paradise captivates with its eccentric characters, each wielding unique powers and occasional moments of fantastical body horror. Though the plot may seem basic initially, the rich backstory of the characters and thrilling action sequences keep viewers hooked, eager to uncover where the story will lead next. Join the adventure and experience the adrenaline-pumping journey through the shadows of Edo-era Japan.
3. My Love Story With Yamada-Kun Lv999
As a Slice of Life and Romance Girlie, of course, the last three would pay homage to my favorite genre of all time!
Enter the world of My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, a charming shoujo anime reminiscent of Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku. In this series, Akane Kinoshita finds solace in an MMORPG after a difficult breakup, where she meets pro gamer Akito Yamada. As their friendship blossoms, Akane discovers herself developing feelings for Yamada, leading to a heartwarming tale of young love.
While the show follows traditional shoujo tropes with its clumsy protagonist and stoic love interest, it offers a delightful twist with its accurate portrayal of MMORPG struggles. With side characters cheering for the main couple and romantic rivals adding to the drama, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 delivers a cute and enjoyable viewing experience, especially for fans of shoujo anime. Join Akane and Yamada on their journey through love and virtual adventures.
2. Skip and Loafer
If Yamada-kun is similar to Wotakoi in more ways than one, Skip and Loafer’s similarity to Kimi ni Todoke—a classic romance anime—is uncanny! Here’s to shy girls making their mark on the cute, kind-hearted guy on campus and their cute little everyday interactions!
Join Mitsumi Iwakura as she adjusts to life in Tokyo’s bustling city after leaving her small town for high school. There, she meets the laid-back Sōsuke Shima, whose easygoing nature complements Mitsumi’s determined spirit. As their unlikely friendship blossoms, they navigate social norms and uncover Shima’s mysterious past together. Experience the heartwarming tale of Mitsumi and Shima’s journey of self-discovery and friendship in this charming anime series.
1. Buddy Daddies
Look, if you haven’t batted an eyelash at this anime show, you are missing out! If you’re like me who’s very much into comedies, a slice of life, and a little bit of action, this show is definitely for you! Buddy Daddies dives into a new world of self-discovery and learning, and it comes with a cute bonus! The main leads (both guys) have a very cute adopted daughter!
For fans craving more content like Spy x Family, Buddy Daddies is a great recommendation. The series centers on two single assassins, Kazuki Kurusu and Rei Suwa, who unexpectedly find themselves caring for a 4-year-old girl named Miri Unasaka. While the plot may have its quirks, the show’s charm lies in the heartwarming family dynamics, particularly the adorable interactions between Suwa and Miri. Although it may not break new ground, Buddy Daddies offers a delightful watch for those seeking heartwarming moments with lovable characters.
As we look back on the finest anime of 2023, we can see that the medium is still thriving as a vivid and dynamic form of storytelling. From the rebirth of treasured classics to the introduction of inventive new series, anime has once again demonstrated its power to engage, inspire, and delight viewers worldwide. As we look to the future, we anxiously await the next wave of anime masterpieces that will continue to push the frontiers of creativity and make an indelible impression on viewers for years.
