Buggy’s Rise to Fame
Buggy is one of the earliest villains introduced in Eiichiro Oda’s epic manga and anime series, One Piece. With his big nose, sensitive personality, and a penchant for theatrics, he initially comes across as a comical adversary. His apparent weakness and cowardly nature make him a source of amusement for both the readers and the other characters in the series. However, beneath this seemingly unimpressive façade lies an incredible and inexplicable source of strength—Buggy seems to never ran out of luck!
Despite his constant bumbling and near-constant perilous situations, Buggy always never fails to find a way out of them, often emerging from these scenarios with unexpected advantages. In fact, his journey through the series is marked by an uncanny ability to exploit opportunities as they arise and capitalize on the sheer randomness of the world around him.
Buggy’s first big break came when the Marines mistakenly identified him as the mastermind behind the Impel Down prison escape, a massive jailbreak that shook the world. The misunderstanding was even further stretched with the revelation that Buggy was once an apprentice of the legendary Roger Pirates. As if that wasn’t enough to bolster his reputation, Buggy was forced to partake in the Summit War, somehow managing to stay alive by pure luck. This made more people want to join his crew. As a result of all the great feats mistakenly getting attached to his name, the World Government eventually asked him to be one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
How Did Buggy Become a Yonko?
In typical Buggy fashion, his promotion to Yonko status is a result of the same old formula: a series of misunderstandings and a generous dose of luck.
With the abolition of the Seven Warlords system brought about by the Reverie, Buggy soon went back to being a fugitive. In an unexpected turn of luck, two former Warlords Crocodile and Mihawk were also up to something at the time. Specifically, Crocodile and Mihawk decided to join forces and establish a new organization called the Cross Guild. However, in order to secure the funds needed for this endeavor, Crocodile approached Buggy to collect his unpaid debts, inadvertently saving Buggy from the pursuing Marines. Unfortunately, Buggy was completely broke. In an attempt to appease Crocodile, Buggy offered up all the resources from his business to support their new venture, with a particular focus on the marketing department.
Just as everything seems to be going smoothly, Buggy’s devoted crew made a remarkable and comical mistake. They designed and published the Cross Guild poster, with both faces of Crocodile and Mihawk placed on the bottom and Buggy’s face taking the center top position. Such design made it appear as though Crocodile and Mihawk were working for Buggy as his underlings.
Within no time, the misinformation started to spread, and it resulted in the rest of the world, including the Marines, thinking that Buggy was the leader of the Cross Guild and was the one calling the shots.
They promptly raised his bounty to over three billion and declared Buggy one of the new Emperors of the Sea, solidifying his place in the world as one of the latest Yonkos.
