To be the King of Pirates. Luffy’s dream has always been to be the Pirate King, but it turns out, there’s something more to that dream that Eiichiro Oda, the author of the world-renowned manga and anime is yet to reveal.
Since the first episode of the hit series One Piece, it has already been established that the protagonist of the show, Monkey D. Luffy dreams to become the King of Pirates, following the footsteps of Gol D. Roger, the first and only person to circumnavigate the world and find Laugh Tale, the home, and origin of the treasure, One Piece.
In each and every episode, the series reminds its viewers that Luffy dreams to be the King of Pirates. That, however, changes after the events of Marineford (time skip). During that time, the fans of One Piece were introduced to a new epiphany: Luffy’s dream is not to become the King of Pirates.

During Ace’s death, he mentioned that although he was happy with the life he had led, he has one regret. That regret was that he won’t be able to see Luffy’s dreams come true. During that time everybody just assumed that his dream was to be the King of Pirates, nothing more, nothing less.
But recent events in Wano suggest otherwise. Before Luffy went up to the rooftop to fight with Kaido, Yamato was reminiscing on a particular memory he had read in Oden’s journal. It was when the former King of Pirates, Gol D. Roger was talking about his dream. In that dream, Yamato also saw a vision of young Luffy talking about his dream with his brothers. Nothing specific was revealed about the dream in that instance, but it is certain that Luffy’s dream isn’t only becoming King of Pirates, but it was something more.

Recent events in Chapter 1060 of the manga strongly support this new-found mystery. As the straw hats recover from the events at Wano, they peacefully sail across the ocean listening to Luffy blab about saving Sabo and finding Vivi. The topic then shifts to the dream he talked about in Yamato’s vision. The panel where he says his dreams out loud is blocked. Nothing. Just a plain, black rectangle. Like a glitch. Then, on the next page, the straw hats are suddenly laughing at how… ridiculous Luffy’s dream was.
Many fans have formulated a wild theory that maybe the King of Pirates isn’t actually the only dream Luffy has and that maybe it was just his means of achieving his true dream, which was to [REDACTED TOP SECRET] which of course, is ridiculous, but as Zoro says, it sounds a lot like something Luffy would dream of. Whatever it is, it has yet to be revealed to readers and you won’t find a canon answer anywhere.
In the 1061 chapters One Piece has published, everyone thought they knew that the sole thing Monkey D. Luffy was aiming for was becoming King of Pirates, but another mystery is unveiled as more chapters are released.
