Scheduled for an April premiere on TV Tokyo and other stations, the series promises a fresh narrative, delving into the intriguing encounter between Kraft Lawrence and the wolf girl Holo.
Returning to reprise their roles are Jun Fukuyama as Kraft Lawrence and Ami Koshimizu as Holo. Takeo Takahashi, a familiar name to the franchise, takes on the role of chief director, while Hijiri Sanpei, known for his work on Spice and Wolf II, directs the anime at studio Passione. Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss, Tower of God) will compose the music, with ENISHIYA producing the series.
Isuna Hasekura initiated the Spice and Wolf novel series in 2006, with illustrations by Jū Ayakura. After a brief hiatus, the series returned in 2016, and the latest volume, the 24th, was released in January 2023.
Yen Press published the 24th novel in North America in August and is also releasing the manga adaptation. It described the story as follows:
The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. Taking the form of a fetching girl with wolf ears and a tail, Holo has wearied of tending to harvests in the countryside and strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. What kind of businessman could turn down such an offer? Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing. Will this wolf girl turn out to be too wild to tame?
The success of the novels spawned two TV anime seasons directed by Takeo Takahashi and scripted by Naruhisa Arakawa. Funimation released both seasons on home video.
Following the television anime, a virtual reality adaptation debuted in June 2019, with a sequel launching in December 2020 for Oculus Rift, HTC VIVE, and Oculus Go Edition.
As fans eagerly await the new series, expectations are high for the beloved Spice & Wolf universe to enchant audiences once again.
