Yes, they did! Elias and Chise did more than just hugging each other in The Ancient Magus’ Bride. As much as these two lovebirds have an average amount of sweet moments throughout the series, their kissing scene definitely ranks among their top ones. But, did you know that Elias isn’t Chise’s first kiss in the series?
The first kiss of the two characters is probably one of the most awaited scenes in any romance anime. Of course, it’s not all about kissing but sometimes it does. Why? Because not only do they provide butterflies in our stomachs but they also reassure us that what the characters have is beyond any kind of relationship… a romantic one. Although the story of Elias Ainsworth and Chise Hatori is more focused on its dark fantasy and supernatural side, the romance between the two is still difficult to not notice and ship.

All throughout season one of the series we have seen Elias Ainsworth rubbing his face on Chise. These happened a couple of times, specifically when they grew closer together. This gesture from the ancient mage is actually a sign of affection. It is also an assurance in order to let each other know where they both stand in each other’s life. I mean, with Elias Ainsworth’s goat-like skull head, kissing will not be the way Hori and Miyamura did it in Horimiya. Mainly because that would be impossible and weird at the same time. However, they did make it happen but Elias was too late to be Chise’s first kiss.
Who is the First Kiss of Chise Hatori?
Sadly, Elias Ainsworth was not the one who secured Chise Hatori’s first kiss. But, Chise sure did have a unique first kiss from another magical creature. Chise got her first-ever kiss stolen by a Leánnan Sídhe named Red whom she met just around their area. In the world of The Ancient Magus’ Bride, a Leánnan Sídhe is similar to what is known to us as vampires. These magical creatures are known to consume the blood of humans and gain great talent from it.

Red might not have consumed the blood of Chise but she sure did gain something more precious. In episode nine of season one, Chise and Ruth unintentionally encountered a man named Joel who owns a house with a beautiful garden. But, what caught their attention is the Leánnan Sídhe whom they can see is with the old man. After having the chance to talk to both Joel and Red, Chise realized that these two share the same feelings with each other. However, since Joel is not blessed with the sight he had only seen Red once and that was even years ago.

But, the presence of Chise as a sleigh beggy might have contributed something because it allowed Joel to once again get a glimpse of the beautiful lady he once saw. The stealing of Chise’s first kiss happened when Chise asks whether Red was in love with Joel. Red shut Chise off from asking another question through this kiss. This is because Red still cannot admit that she is indeed in love and Chise’s question was still too much for her. Of course, Chise, a fifteen years old almost sixteen, who never experience that kind of thing was definitely flustered. But this event turned out to be a bridge for them to form a deep bond of friendship with each other.
How Did Elias and Chise’s First Kiss Happen?
Their first kiss was made possible by a tradition that even in the real world is being practiced. It is also a tradition in the world of Elias and Chise to also make a mistletoe and eventually do the K-I-S-S-I-N-G. When it was only a day left until Christmas Eve, Elias and Chise decided to gather some plants or branches needed to make their first-ever mistletoe together.
They say that traditionally, it’s okay to kiss under the mistletoe. Want to try it?

Night came and the mistletoe was finally ready. Thus, they both hang in a nice spot on the door frame of their house. However, Elias mentioned something about a tradition usually done under the mistletoe which is none other than kissing.

Chise was surprised. But, she shyly accepted Elias’ offer because she saw that he really wanted to try it. So, she asked him to crouch down a bit for her. While Chise might have chosen to kiss Elias’ forehead instead of his lips (because it would have been too awkward) it was still a good stepping stone in their continuously growing relationship. In exchange for the kiss, Elias rubbed his head onto Chise’s cheeks maybe as a way to kiss her back.
If this is how the great Elias Ainsworth gives a kiss then he has given quite a few to Chise already before this one. Regardless, Elias might not have been her first kiss, but it was definitely the only kiss that Chise experienced romantically. Plus, there is a big chance that Elias might not have her first but will surely secure her last kiss.
